I had a topic all figured out that I was going to write about today, but then it happened. A staff member did something massively stupid that sent me through the roof. Now, mistakes happen, and all of us make them from time to time. Hell, I forgot to order the fish last night for the fish and chips today. It’s not like it was intentional. What I’m talking about is much worse. The intentional laziness of one person that brings us all down, that make the entire staff look like inept clowns.
Today is the Kentucky Derby. Steeped in southern tradition, this is the height of southern hospitality and class. The beautiful women in their exorbitant hats, the parade of pure thoroughbreds lining up to race. It even has its own beverage, the Mint Julep. It’s a simple drink- mint, bourbon and sugar. So easy to make. We even made a lamb dish to pay tribute to it. Now, it’s not uncommon for someone to order this fine beverage on this day. It’s almost a requirement. What is not acceptable, however, is for a jackass bartender to say he can’t make one because he has no mint. And there is PLENTY of mint in the kitchen. PURE LAZINESS. What’s even more upsetting is this bartender has worked in the same place for over a year, and has NO IDEA where to even BEGIN to look for mint. This is someone who doesn’t give a damn for himself, his job, OR the people he works with.
This enigma is not found only in the restaurant business, this is the New America. Everyone thinks they are entitled to whatever they want, and if they don’t want to do something, someone else will do it. We don’t want to raise our own kids, so we hire Latino nannies while complaining about the amount of illegal immigrants in the country. We don’t want to wash dishes for a living, and hire Mexicans. We don’t want to run a convenience store, so Arabs and Indians take over 7-11. We as Americans appear to not want to do anything, except be in our own reality show. Thank you, Paris Hilton, for ushering in the decline of America as we know it. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson did all they did just so you could make a sex tape and show your vajayjay to the world. Makes me really proud to be an American.
Until we as a Nation get up off our lazy, fat asses and get to work, nothing will change. China will pass us as the largest economy. By the time we do anything about it, we will be a forgotten people, only talked about as a joke of how to screw the pooch. And to me, the worst part of it all, the most glaring example of how America jumped the shark, is to watch a bartender refuse to make a drink because he doesn’t feel like it.
