Top 10 Legendary Screenwriters

Craig Mazin, screenwriter and correspondent for AskMen.com, recently compiled his Top 10 list of "legendary" Hollywood screenwriters. His choices were:

1. Billy Wilder
2. Ernest Lehman
3. Oliver Stone
4. Woody Allen
5. Ben Hecht
6. Francis Ford Coppola
7. David Mamet
8. Paul Schrader
9. William Goldman
10. Robert Benton.

Here are a couple of my favorites who didn't make Mazin's list:

Robert Riskin, writer of "Mister Deeds Goes to Town" and "It Happened One Night," and

Paddy Chayefsky, winner of three best screenplay Oscars for "Marty," "The Hospital" and "Network."

But what about you? Who would be on your list of the top 10 Hollywood screenwriters?

I know the Hippocratic Oath states "do no harm" but it'd be nice if it also included the clause "do some good." I am largely against self diagnosis but I'm finding it more and more imperative that one does so before seeing a doctor. Too often I've heard "I haven't heard of that before." Really? From a specialist? Do they realize they are honed in on one particular focus and they haven't heard of it? If I have read it in three journals and five online HOSPITAL guidelines for disease you, kind doctor, are an idiot and, worse, dangerous. I agree with the "approach the disease as a puzzle" concept of House. Here's one piece, now, where does that lead us? Unfortunately, it's just like any other business: just get through the day. I am intrigued at the moment at how doctors and insurance companies are at odds. HMO says no, you cannot have an MRI; there's no proof it's needed. So doctor has to get an x-ray. Doesn't show anything. HMO, still no MRI. Dr orders CT scan next. Nothing. Third attempt, HMO says okay, now that you've done all of that, have an MRI. What do you know, here we finally see what's causing the problem! I don't see as much a problem of doctors ordering tests but of insurance companies having stupid protocols like the one above and then complain about so many tests run... it's their fault. Doctors, however, do love to give drugs. You've got high cholesterol, take this. I'd prefer to change my diet and how about fish oil and niacin? That'll work better AND won't destroy my liver! No, take this drug. If one disagrees, they take offense and do little to treat. I had a doctor that stopped scheduling follow ups because she didn't like the fact that I didn't want medication.

I read a study where they said that only 3% of the workforce, regardless of the field, is competent in their positions.

Good list Mazin has there (good to see William Goldman) though where is John Huston?! I hear Coppola's original Dracula screenplay is highly regarded over the one they went with (a TV movie screenplay Winona Ryder preferred). Hollywood today, I've got to give a nod to Christopher Nolan. First of his I saw was Memento and a rarity, I made note of who not only directed (directors were important to me at the time) but wrote so I could follow his career. Very neo-noir. Also Guillermo del Toro though it's probably more his directing (same with Peter Jackson). Steve Martin is an all around treasure, John Cleese is more than just a Python and I love the writing of Joss Whedon. I've even read a screenplay done by Stephen King, as far as I know was never filmed, that I thoroughly enjoyed. He did a wonderful Sherlock Holmes short called "The Doctor's Case" that channeled Conan-Doyle. It narrated, radio show style, by Tim Curry was magical.

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately I won't make anyone's top list. At the moment I'm a freelance whore biggrin I am writing for any website that will take my work. I am not complaining, it is constant.
