(sigh)

Well, I went over to my buddy's house yesterday.

I told him that I wanted just a few minutes of his time so I could say a couple things, and that he could have as much of my time as he wanted.

"I did not fuck up your bike. I do not want to kill you. I'm not out to get you. If I'd wanted to kill you, I would have shot you."

He said, "That's a great thing to say, Justin, 'I would have shot you.'"

"Yes," I said. "My point is that I'm not trying to kill you! Doesn't it seem like a lot of trouble to kill someone by building them a bike and then sabotaging it?

"I value our friendship. I really do appreciate the things you've done for me. Hell, you threw me that kick ass birthday party! That was awesome!"

He just sort of grunted.

"I have no idea what would make you think that I would fuck up your bike."

"Man, you freaked out on me about a year ago, saying 'We never hang out anymore!' Maybe you did it so that we'd spend this summer together, rebuilding my bike. When you first looked at the cuts on the frame you said that we'd have to completely take the bike apart. Man, you don't have to take everything apart to weld the frame!"

"Well, to do it right, yeah, it's a good idea. And it wouldn't take all summer to do this, either. You saw how quickly I took my bike apart, why would yours be any different? Mine's taking forever to put back together, sure, but that's because I'm changing it all up."

"Whatever, Justin, I'm not a dumbass."

I didn't say anything to that.

I loaded my engines into the trunk of the car.

"Man, I love you like a brother. I've always considered you family. I would never do anything to hurt you, and would do everything in my power to keep you from getting hurt. That's what friends do. I hope that you can figure out that I'm not your enemy, I'm your friend."

I was getting choked up, and I could tell from his expression that everything I was saying was bouncing off, so I got in the car and drove home. I've known this dude for decades. He's a great, great guy about 90% of the time, but the other 10% he's just a dumb dick...

Buoyed by the support of two good friends who called me yesterday, I felt good enough to dive right in and start working on my new engine. It also seems kind of important to maintain the rhythm of the work, and it helps me feel better if I can accomplish something...

I went to start replacing gaskets and can't find my damn sealer...

well I hope he comes around soon, that is just crazy that he isn't even hearing you out about the whole thing, it sounds like he just snapped.

I hope the engine comes together nicely.

It sucks how people can let a misinterpretation thrust a wedge in longtime friendships.

It's good, however, that such stresses can fuel our creativity & drive - good luck on the engine.smile

Geez that just sucks. I hope he comes around - but who knows - damage to trust on that kind of level is very difficult to repair.

That sucks man. I hope he comes to his senses.

I envy your workshop. I live in a crowded inner city apartment and do all my soldering on the floor of our kitchen.

And about assholes turning knobs, my lighting teacher told me about Mano Negras sound technician, who really where a part of the band. He used the balance and eq sections of the mixer as effects. I think it could be kind of cool to have a sound engineer as part of a live act, an actual band member.

It is sad when a good friend doesn't get you. It's one thing if you don't know someone well enough for them to realize that you have their best interest at heart or at least would not mean to cause harm.....but when it is someone you are close to for a long time, it really does hurt. I am sorry to hear this. Hope it passes.

Well I lost a friend who turned into a dumb fuck similar to your situation. We had almost lost it once before when I knew his wife was having an affair, I had a key to their house as I often spent weekends there. She was in the bedroom with some guy when I walked down the hall, she got up and told me that there was no way I was going to tell my friend, because who is he going to believe.
When the second thing happened it was his new girlfriend got between us and I just did not feel it was worth the trouble, dealing with him when he was going to get an earful if she found out we talked. She was a bitch, I havent seen him in 10 years, and we spoke once or twice about 8 years ago. Now that I live near him, maybe I will try to get in touch with him.

I'd just wish that some more bands and sound techs experimented together with the basic concepts of live sound. Megaphones at the back of the stage is a bad idea, i agree. But what about over the audience? Why not have Tom Waits voice suddenly appear above their heads, like a supermarket announcement? PA systems nowadays are incredibly complex (as i am aware that you know, probably a lot better than me), so much more could be done if people just tried and experimented.

But then again, the conventions of live sound are there because they work great. I'm not saying that they should be abandoned, maybe just broaden a little. And of course I agree that the firts priority of the sound technician is to provide the audience with a good representation of the bands sound. I work as a sound (and lights) tech myself from time to time, although still at rather small venues.

On another topic, I need some good humbuckers and tuners for this baby:

I want pickups that sound retro and Les Pauly, and good looking good tuners. Any suggestions?

Aw shit, man. I must have missed a blog, that sucks about A.M. I'd be inclined to believe he'll come around and realize how silly that notion is. People are strange emotional and irrational, they've been so at least back to Shakespere, hahaha. I try to see it all as entertainment, but that's pretty tough to do when it's personal. Anyhow, most everything works out pretty ok with time. Keep at the bike!

Heh! I'm not as bad as that vid! I just leaned back a little against my tour pack with my arms crossed over my chest. I was passed by another dude on a Harley who was totally surprised. :-) He waved and I waggled my fingers at him in a girly little "ta-ta!". >:->
