It's not ordinary to see two adult groundhogs sharing each others company. They usually fight to defend their space. Attitudes change for a short period when the weather turns spring-like. The girl on the left will be three years old in about a month and her boyfriend looks like he might be a little older but I don't know for certain. He appeared by surprise as an immigrant from some other groundhog territory last summer. Apparently he was forced to move by another critter who was trying to eat him because the first time I saw him the end of his wounded tail was furless, skinless and bleeding. Fortunately he healed up very well and seems to suffer no ill effect from his tail shortening experience. Since these two seem to be getting along with each other today I expect that there will be another batch of baby groundhogs around next month. Last year Notch had five cubs and I expect that she will be raising the same number this year.
