Officially unemployed as of 1.30pm yesterday.

It felt awesome to leave the shop for the last time.

Working in a retail stockroom was monotonous as hell and far from an ideal workplace for someone with a creative mind like myself. Couple that with the fact I had to work alongside 3 small-minded, judgemental (and verging on racist) people during my entire shift, every day and its no surprise I'm over the fucking moon with happiness!!!biggrin

Now I am jobless and unable to claim the dole for at least 6-8 weeks. I do not want to claim the dole and hope I find a job asap. But, I have no experience in any full time design jobs and over the last few weeks have major doubts that graphic design is what I want to do anymoreblackeyedpukefrown

I am very confused with the whole thing and as I approach my 30th birthday, I feel the need to sort out my life sooner rather than later!

Maybe a week or so off with time to think is just what you need to figure things out.
Good luck, it's a tough place to be. I know.

I know the feeling...I'm leaving my job in one month, with no back up and moving cross country...yet I'm so happy!! I'm sure life will work out wonderfully for you smile

Maybe you will go on to create a hugely successful comic book series smile

The joblessness is always scary, but it sounds like you've made a positive decision getting out of there. Hope it doesn't take you long to find something new, whether it's design or something else.

What is it that's making you doubt design as a career?

I'm totally with you on being sick of leaflets and all that crap. When I was working as a designer I was making way too much stuff that I just didn't care about and couldn't feel proud of.

Just had a look at your SG art, it's really cool! You should definitely try and do something with it, prints might be a good way to go

30 year old change of life! I had one of those smile All started with a breakdown, but hey, guess I needed the change!

Have you studied graphic design? From what I've seen you're really good at it, but I know that deosn't mean you enjoy it. Whatever you decide to do, be true to yourself. You're a creative soul, go with it. It will give you so much self satisfaction. If you're able to get the dole in the meantime till you work out what you want then do it. I'm sure you've paid enough taxes, it's not so bad taking something back for a change.

I'm glad you left a job that wasn't making you happy. It's such a hard thing to do. So yay you!! smile

Oh I know it's totally rare for me too, normally I'm a tongue-tied sweaty-palmed mess. I don't know why it's dfferent with her but I'm not going to question it and risk jinxing it tongue She's coming back to Auckland soonish (decided that, among other reasons, seeing me and how this works out is more important to her than hiking!) so hopefully we can make a go of things.

As for the art, I hope you do something with it because you're definitely talented, and it's the sort of stuff that would totally find an audience. Make it a belated New Year's resolution or something
