So I went to see Across the Universe last evening, and I have a few things to say about it.
First things first, I was excited to see this film. I love the Beatles and I thought this film had potential.
But I was slightly disappointed. I liked Jim Sturgess, he has a good voice for the part and a fitting look, as did Joe Anderson. Evan Rachel Wood wasn't bad, but she did put on a few pounds for the role (I am not saying she was fat, just not as thin). The rest of the cast was forgettable at best.
The writing was atrocious, or perhaps the editing. Major plot holes throughout the movie that leave one wondering what happened before, during, and after a handful of sequences. The PG-13 rating was a joke. Evidently, tits are fine for teenage audiences, but we can't show any drug use. I guess we were just left to assume when they were tripping or not.
Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe I am being too tough on the movie, but I think any movie that uses the Beatles to tell a story needs to be fucking great. The music is great, don't disgrace it will a half produced movie.
