Hey. I have a friend who is an addict. I have tried everything in my power to help her, but she doesn't want help. You can be a supportive friend and try but i have learned that you can't help someone who doesn't want to be help. Hang in there. I will work out.

It's really hard when you are a fixer to stand back and watch someone else make mistakes when you know you could have helped them avoid it. However, some people have to learn on their own, and view a fixer's "interference" as just that, interference. I'm a fixer too, so I feel your pain. I used to drive K_Rex crazy by always offering advice and solutions, when all she really wanted was just to talk and have someone listen. I've learned to keep my mouth shut more often and just let people talk, and to actually ask her if she wants someone to listen, or is looking for thoughts and advice.

Just remember to make sure you are there for your friend to complain to and lean on without always offering advice so she doesn't start to think of you as nagging her. It's a fine line to walk, and hard to do, especially if someone doesn't really want to solve their problem.
