Something I hate: addiction. I have a close friend that is battling and succeeding in the fact that she hasn't used, but her husband left her because he didn't believe her even though she has had 12 clean urines. I don't really know his side of the story, so I won't judge. I just know that she does have a bad track record and maybe he was just tired. I want to help her so bad and am doing everything in my power, but its so hard to help people that don't make the right choices. She is supposed to be going to groups 3 days a week and has missed most of them. I try and tell her that even though she is miserable, not sleeping, not eating, that the group is the best thing she can do for herself right now. But it seems to be falling on deaf ears. I'm frustrated. I'm a fixer, a nurturer, a mother. Its what I know and I don't know how to stop. Its starting to effect me in the fact that i'm getting crabby and depressed that I really can't do anything for her. Sorry for the rant, just had to get that off my chest.

Hey. I have a friend who is an addict. I have tried everything in my power to help her, but she doesn't want help. You can be a supportive friend and try but i have learned that you can't help someone who doesn't want to be help. Hang in there. I will work out. smile

you can only help thse who are prepared to be helped...if she is not ready it is a waste of energy to push her...just be there to listen but dont take on her shit! smile

It's really hard when you are a fixer to stand back and watch someone else make mistakes when you know you could have helped them avoid it. However, some people have to learn on their own, and view a fixer's "interference" as just that, interference. I'm a fixer too, so I feel your pain. I used to drive K_Rex crazy by always offering advice and solutions, when all she really wanted was just to talk and have someone listen. I've learned to keep my mouth shut more often and just let people talk, and to actually ask her if she wants someone to listen, or is looking for thoughts and advice.

Just remember to make sure you are there for your friend to complain to and lean on without always offering advice so she doesn't start to think of you as nagging her. It's a fine line to walk, and hard to do, especially if someone doesn't really want to solve their problem.

You are a good friend for trying to be there. Good luck with this, and remember to also be careful of your heart.

That usually explains my usual mood because I can't help people I care about and that they don't take my advice or appreciate my attempts... I"m sorry
