DOCTOR WHO!!!
I want to talk a little about a company called Big Finish. Big Finish produces original audio dramas of classic Doctor Who. Generally they star the actors who portrayed the Doctor on TV. Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. Big Finish does not have the rights to any of the Doctors, characters, or villains from the new series.
I have been a fan of Big Finish for years and the sound design, the direction and acting are generally very good. Of the drama's produced. there have been some that are great, some that are just good and as with everything, there are some that are crappy. The best part is that the plays are available for download at a reasonable rate.
I was exploring their site this week and i found a series called Doctor Who Unbound. The Unbound episodes were available for $5.00. The Unbound concept explores "What if?" questions like "What if the Valeyard was victorious?" or "What if the Doctor was never UNIT's science adviser?" These plays give different actors the opportunity to play the Doctor. Well known actors like Derek Jacobi and David Warner get a chance to play everybody's favorite Timelord.
I downloaded two episodes. "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Masters of War" The "What if question in this one is "What if the Doctor had never been UNIT's science adviser. They star David Warner as the Doctor with the late Nicholas Courtney playing Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart as the companion. "Sympathy for the Devil" is the first of the two and it takes place in Hong Kong on the eve of the handover from Great Britain to China. During the story we find out that the world is quite different from the mainstream Whovian verse. It is darker, the realities of the world are grimmer and more like our own. We also learn about the difficult choices that the Brigadier was forced to make without the Doctor's help. Without any spoilers, let's just say that the villain of the episode is rather popular.
Sympathy for the Devil really exceeded my expectations. The script is a good Doctor Who script and David Warner shows us this tantalizing snap shot of his take on the Doctor. I have to say, he is great! Interesting, commanding and clever, he is the Doctor through and through. His performance is so good, it left me wishing that they had made an entire series or seasons of these non-canon tales.
An added bonus for fans of the new series is David Tennant himself in a supporting role as a Colonel in UNIT. He plays a character that is very different from the Doctor! Very, very cool. I highly recommend it to anyone with a little time and $5.00 burning a hole in their debit card. I really look forward to listening to "Masters of War"
