Fairly non-substantive entry.
I've been making money shoveling snow, in tandem with my friend Roger who has a truck with a plow. He plows, I shovel. Good exercise, but cold and dependent on the weather.
Last week in the subway station (Buffalo has the lamest subway system ever, BTW) I overheard a guy talking about somebody hiring for 12 or 13 dollars an hour. I asked him who was hiring, and he said the hospital was hiring "housekeepers."
I don't know if that involves emptying bedpans or not, but at that rate of pay I'm guessing it does. That's fine; I was the primary person taking care for my Grandmother for a good portion of her last year alive, when she was losing control of her bladder, bowels, and abilitiy to walk and dress herself, so squeamish is one thing I'm not.
Today I went over to the hospital and picked up an application. I had to pay $1.25 just to park for ten minutes while I went into Human Resources and picked up the app. I guess the hospital needs all the money it can get, but this isn't Manhattan, where parking is a scarce commodity. Does guest/visitor parking really need a dollar twenty-five minimum charge?
I don't like hospitals, but lately I've been mostly nocturnal, staying up all night chainsmoking, listening to Electric Wizard on headphones, and working on the novel, and I've gotten into a twisted zone where working in what I consider a temple of death appeals to me.
Usually extensive Electric Wizard listening is accompanied by hardcore pot smoking or other drug use, but I'm trying to keep my wee-wee clean for the hospital job in case they piss test. Just caffeine and Mini Thins for me (and menthols of course). The human resources lady couldn't tell me anything about the job's hours or responsibilities; nothing like applying blind.
Oh well, here's hoping I get it. Even part-time, 12 bucks an hour would be awesome. I just hope they have third shift available; I'm really digging the whole nocturnal thing. Makes me feel young again, since that's when I had most of my third-shift jobs.
