Tonight I watched "Sane Man" which was a film of Bill Hicks shot in 1989. I've never really seen much of Hicks' material before - other than the weird Austin obsession with him (stickers that say "I wish I'd met Bill Hicks" are often spotted in local businesses), all I knew was the accusation that Dennis Leary stole his material and persona from Hicks. Considering how NOT funny Leary is these days, I wasn't too interested.
His act was really funny, and despite being really dated in some regards (I had to laugh when he complained about President Bush the first - little did we know we had it good then!) but for the most part it was really funny, really on point, and I was very impressed. I'm sad that he died before he could turn his scathing wit onto the Bush II administration, although in a way kind of glad for him because I think what has gone in this country over the last 8 years might very well have killed him anyway.
It's sad that he talked about how brilliant people die in this country but mediocrity lives on, knowing that he himself died a few years later.
