while in line at the walgreens tonight the cashier yelled someone call 911,
i saw a woman spurting blood from her neck. and people all around her, none of which seemed to be helping. i passed the baby off to the mrs, and went over, her throat had been cut, deep, i swear i saw the inside of her windpipe.
i wrapped my hand in a bag, and used paper towels to apply pressure while i took her pulse with my other hand. at this point she was shivering and pouring blood. i kept her calm, laid her down, and repeated that she would be alright. she said a man stole her purse and stabbed her in the neck. well the neck part was at least true. as im doing the doing, i noticed that there are now a group of probably twenty people including staff around me taking pictures and video.
her pulse was strong, the police arrived in about five minutes, and didnt bother taking over, they just left me there on the ground with her.
a few minutes later the emt's arrived, and took over.
apparently they recognized her, she had mental health issues, and they surmised that this was a self inflicted wound, and being now that i noticed her purse was aside her body, i believed them. it took a minute or two, but they decided that it was best for them to intervene . hoorah for incompetent medical professionals, i definitely use that term loosely in this case. they picked her up , got her on a stretcher, and took their sweet time getting me any type of sanitizer for my hands. now im not writing this to say that im some brave fellow or anything of the like.
im writing this in more of the fashion that i have no faith in my fellow man.
for all the shit i get for my appearance from the general public, for all i have dealt with all my life, i tend to think i am a rather normal individual. the kind of person that is willing to step up for a person in need. all the longhorn wearing yuppies, and the mexican day laborers were more interested in the train wreck than they were in the passenger.
its just a big shit show these days, and this evenings events further prove to me that "my fellow man" or more accurately "imbeciles" are so wrapped up in themselves that they no longer have the ability or desire to care about anyone but themselves. this is a nation of motherfuckers out for themselves.
and its a sad sad society.
so yeah, maybe that shit will be on you tube, under "i got stabbed by a black guy", maybe it will never be seen, but it happened, and im sure it happens everyday in one form or another.
so i might say to you as my fellow man, or woman, or being, live your life, pursue your own happiness but dont ever forget that a single act of selflessness on your part might be able to change another persons life forever. consider the pursuit of those around you, care for more than your three feet of personal space, and we might one day be able to call each other friends.
we might for even a second be able to respect and care for someone instead of caring about what we can gain from someone.

wow. that is a crazy story. i agree with you like 95% of the way on that... however, i'm willing to bet the reason no one stepped in is out of fear. blood is fuckin scary to most people, as are bloodborne diseases. maybe as a tattoo artist you are accustomed to blood. but i'd say you are also a little bit stronger of a person than i am, cause i'm willing to bet i wouldn't have the cajones to help a blood spurting loony. kudos to you.
