Blog
MAY 4, 2013 @ 08:03 PM | 1 COMMENT

I didn't mean for that blog to be up for a month. I have had a busy time. The days have gotten longer and the weather warmer so I feel energised to do things. I finished a project for the 26 things new years resolution and will finish another soon, maybe tomorrow. It looks like I'm going to have a busy May.

I wanted to do a bit of a review of StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm. I've finished the game now. Yes that something that can be done the day it came out, and people did that. I wanted to take my time going threw the levels. I think I played the hybrid level 4 or 5 times, doing different things, or getting achievements. Like Wings of Liberty there are a lot of cinematics at the start of the game, It may have been partly the order I played it but I felt it was almost one to many. They tell the story beautifully, even on the low resolution I have to use on my computer. I keep noticing the serious fuck off doors that Blizzard designs, one of them is sort of a box top so I may build that if I end up working in a sheet metal shop again, or owning sheet metal tools in the future. The game didn't have the Roach evolution I was looking forward to, the gaining 5 hit points for every kill, up to some number, game play wise there are better options, but I still think it would have been cool.

I didn't end up playing with the upgrades as much as I thought I would. Partly because some of the upgrades to the zergling and Kerrigan regarding zerglings are so powerful. I played threw on normal difficulty which may be to easy for me now as most missions I could just roll threw the opposition with Kerrigan and a bunch of 'lings. I'm going to play threw again on hard difficulty and brutal if I can, this next time I'll choose the other of the 2 Zergling evolutions, the ones that can jump up or over things. I chose the spawn 3 instead of 2 option, gain 50% more little expendable units, instantly. so if your base is getting attacked just hit 0 for my hatchery hot key S and hold Z and you don't have to run back to your base. I played most of the game with way fewer units that I could have had because of the ling bonus, and the Kerrigan upgrade that gives you free ones every 30 seconds, that ment I ended up with tons of money on most missions too as I was attacking with a 3 or 4 generation free army.

The Kerrigan upgrade I really liked was 'wild mutation' friendly units gain 200 hit points and 100% faster attack for 10 seconds. So the already overpowering zerglings go from 35 hp and attacking twice every second to 235hp and four times each second. They survive running threw anything and any building they are attacking just disappears. When you activate it it hits any units in the little area there is a feral roar and tentacles come up from the ground, the unit affected get a little bigger. I'm sure you get more tentacles and it louder and a longer roar if you hit more units. I think of Mad Max's super charger that he can turn on and off when I click it.

Threw out the campain the story naturaly pits you against other zerg rogue groups that gained power when Kerrigan was returned mostly human. The protoss get in her way and some are also helping the terrans so you get to play against the three races, and some hybrids in one mission. There's a prison break mission again, that one was one of the fun ones in Wings of Liberty.

It does make me wonder about how the next chapter will end. How will Blizzard end the plot line with out ending the story?

In the mean time I've got the campain to replay in Hard difficulty and to try to play in Brutal difficulty, and back on to ladder, see if I can get into gold league.

Today is my first girlfriend's 30th birthday. The first person I thought of spending the rest of my life with, sharing a house and child. Looking back she is the first reasonable dream of the future I had. She was the cause of a great time of contentment in my life and taught me how to feel so much.

We don't have a daughter, or a son We never had a house together, basement suite, apartment. She wasn't still in high school when I left for university. We didn't go to each other's proms.

I still hear her name or see a face in the crowd and wonder if it's owner is who she grew into.

Somewhere out there I hope she's having a great time,

Happy Birthday You.

It does make me wonder if someone in the shipping or packaging departments at amazon got caught by those eyes. Or if they put my book and stuff together like that on purpose.

FEBRUARY 11, 2013 @ 08:36 PM

So and bunch of stuff happen this last week:

I say week because on Tuesday I had my first Etsy sale, so that completes resolution 2012 A4.1- Sell something on Etsy. I sold the smaller of the two jewelry boxes that I had listed and shipped off to it's new owner in Colorado on wednesday. I didn't really make any money on it as it's noted in the wood working world that you can't make a good hourly wage on small stuff, that's why wood workers make kitchens. And I sent a little gift along with it.

Wednesday The shop worked itself out of work. This is a bad thing, I've got a job that I'm building right now but it's going to be finished by the end of tomorrow. I don't like working slowly just to work slowly. Yes the cold or the heat slows you down, some builds take longer and need more thought than others; but not for the sake of working slower. I decided to leave a lunch which gave me some time to get that box shipped out earlier.

I did work thursday, half the shop showed up to work and oddly the ohter half showed up anyway, and hung out or worked on their own stuff.

It was a long week end this week end, and I feel I got a lot done. Standard laundry/errands. At some point scroll button my my mouse stopped working. I got to meet SG Cheri and she signed my Suicide Girls book, which she isn't in. It would be cool to see her again and chat for a bit, I guess I'm a bit spoiled by how I 'met' Malloreigh for the first time after I had been taking with her online for a year. I listed a new item on my etsy page WLMCreations one of the now many 'Chrichton' vests It didn't turn out as well as I hope, I'm going to change a couple of things. Cut a half inch out of the collar, make the arm holes smaller and better shaped. I'm going back to the longer zipper that I put on my own. I feel I priced it a little low to compensate for that but what do I know? Someone favorited it already. I've gotten 40 or so page views this long week end but only 2 for the vest, most of them are going for the remaining jewelry box. I guess it's drawing people in at least.

I've had a couple of little talks with a woman that works at the grocery store I go to, she remembers the couple of things I buy from her all the time (customer service desk).

I put a new much brighter light in my sand blasting cabinet and sand blasted the radiator fan shroud for my car. I'm going to send it to the powdercoater when I'm at work this week. I guess i may get it back on thursday the 14th that would be handy.

I finally got around to sewing the vinyl onto my cars steering wheel, it turned out pretty well. I almost had a failure that would have ment redoing an hour or so of hand lacing. I almost cut threw the thread pulling it tight but it held.

I re watched 'the big hit' I've been meaning to do that since I realized that it has Robin Dunne from Sanctuary in it as the white rapper guy who can't form a sentence. I know from Sanctuary commentaries that he is a bit of a method actor and a bit of a jack ass, so I just kept smiling any time I saw him knowing he was doing that off camera as well.

I've played some single player wings of liberty, I've gone threw the 'echos of the future' mission a couple of times with the don't build any new units idea. I didn't notice what my best time was on the normal difficulty but I think it was 20-25 minutes, with the bonus for under 20 minutes on hard that I some how got with 20:08. the first play threw I got 17, and I've got it down to 7 something. I think you can do it in like 4 or 5.

So what will the next seven days hold?

"It would take decades if work by thousands of scientists in a particle accelerator powered by dump trucks of flaming grant money" -Professor Farnsforth

I like that I have access to a welding maching, great angle grinder, access to a shop space and know how to weld and today I used all that to fix a broken metal cat litter scoop because my local store only sells plastic ones now.

Bits and pieces

I saw the movie 'Parker'

There are some parts of it that I liked but I found I had a problem with suspension of disbelief for the injuries the main character deals with in the movie. Normaly I'm fine with the hero wincing off what ever gun/knife/arrow wound (s)he has just suffered or the more realistic Selene passing out in the car after Lucian stabs her threw the roof, or Maximius eventualy falling off his horse from the 3" cut on his arm getting infected. I guess it was because it was sort of the middle of the two in this movie.

I've been watching a Far Cry 3 walk threw. It looks like an interesting game to me. I like huge world it's set in, I think if I were to play it I would end up doing a bunch of driving, a bit of rallye threw the dirt roads. I like the look of Vass and Citra not a big fan of some of her mating rituals, and Vass's style he does crazy well. I want to make a copy of that knife, something to play around with on the anvil at work. I wonder about using charcoal rather than 'wasting' the shops oxy-acetylene, but I think you need a blower and more of a set up for it to work rather than just lighting the torch. The walk threw doesn't go into the leveling up you can do in the game. One of the things is you can collect animal skins, in a badly animated skinning the dead ____ on the ground infront of you little scene, to make things to store the loot and weapons you collect. The first one is a simple draw string bag you make out of boar's skin. It got me thinking that later in the game you would have a tack vest with MOLLE loops made out of raw wet boar pelt. Some sort of Ostrich and the Komodo dragon are also hunted for their pelts in the game so maybe the upgraded swag carriers are made out of those. I wonder if there are a preset number of the bad guys in the game, if you wander around taking them out and later do the missions are their none left and you can then walk threw unopposed?

The bigger game news is this:

I was starting to think Blizzard wasn't going to put out an other heart of the swarm video or commercial. They do have a pretty loyal fan base. I'm going to buy the game on day one, March 12, just to buy it the first day. I think it sends a handy message if they need to explain their spending to anyone. They broke the 'In the first 24 hours sales record' when they released 'Wings of Liberty' and when they released 'Diablo 3' they broke their own record they set with 'Wings of Liberty'. I guess they may do a super bowl commercial tomorrow, or maybe not. When was the last duct tape commercial you saw? was it on Mythbusters or watching Apollo 13? WD40 has done some but mostly because they put a straw on the can that folds.

In the video does it seam like the ultralisk/tank shell hit is running a bit faster than this video? (2:14)

Can't wait for the single player evolve options

New Years resolutions for 2013

1- Get my finances back in order The back third of the year always seams to be down financial for me, I used to pay my car insurance in aug/sept, some of the time I was in school and not working, what ever time I missed in the winter for bad weather, being sick or over christmas break, etc. This past year I also bought some nice tools that, were expensive, and the new car that my family paid for most of but still, there was a big little bit left. I got my old job with a raise back in august, but so far I haven't seen much from that. A sort of odd thing is that the payroll is direct deposit twice a month, so there isn't the huge range of monthly incomes (bad or good) that my prevous job had, or the range from months that ended up with 3 every two week pay checks. I'm not going to have a month that goes in the top ten of my income spead sheet. but I'm going to have lots around 30th. Bit of a change.

2- Find a good home for my car I've realized that I can't keep my car I wanted to keep for ever. It's going to be hard for me to sell on a number of levels. I used to try fixing cars to sell them but I had a lot of trouble just getting someone to come look at them. The first person generaly bought it but it always took more time that I hoped. This time I am looking for someone who will be passionate about my car, so it will likely take longer. I'm worried that someone will look at it and i won't be ok selling it to them, if they would be able to take care of it, and then no one else turning up. So it will be hard for me.

3- Have 26 things I can say I built or finished this year I am a fan of the 365's that people do, so this is my version. I do build things at work but those aren't going count. I picked 26 as it is mostly a week end thing. I work 10 hour days and live 30 minutes away from the shop space I use so most of the stuff I want to build doesn't get worked on durning the week. When my parents moved in to separate houses my brother and I agreed that we end up losing one week end in three dealing with one parent or another. The shop space I use also isn't heated so besides being a bit uncomfortable to work in during the winter, there are some things I can do, glue doesn't set, stain doesn't dry, paint doesn't cure. There's talk of overtime at work this spring which I will go for because I just do. That how i came up with half the week ends in the year, some metal working, sewing, wood working and leather, some tools and jigs.

4- Prove to myself I can make money building things It does go along with the above resolution, and one from last year. I'm not sure if there is a dollar amount on this or if it's more to find a variety of places to sell things. At some point I'm going to have to decide to buy my own shop space or largely stop building things. I want to know if I can afford to keep making things. My dad has talked to me about buying the shop space I use now from him, he's 77 so at some point he (or his estate) will end up selling it. There aren't many similar spaces available and they don't come on the market that often, so do I buy my own before my dad sells his? Another factor is that your not susposed to make money out of my dad's space, while it is owned not rented or leased so the neighbours can't really do anything about it, why test that? I can't buy a house with a big garage because they are too expensive here and the realestate market has so many places for sale that I wouldn't be able to sell my condo. The lack of small shop spaces is a problem Adam Savage bought up on one of his talks on Tested.com. He was talking about San Francisco but it holds true here and likely lots of places, you can't buy 500-1,000 sq ft shop spaces, here they start at 3,000 sq ft.

5- Try online dating site I'm not social enought to meet people that aren't in a customer service roll, so yeah dating.

Unresolved from last year

2012 A6- Yes I'm using the catalog style for Near Earth Asteroids, deal with it. Have more sex

2012 A4.1- Sell something on Etsy One of my resolutions from last year was to open an etsy page and sell something. I got the first part, WLMCreations but I haven't made a sale yet.

2012 A5- Make modular shelving for my condo I have a lot of books and movies, some are on an ikea shelf that I don't like and most of the books are in rubbermaid boxes stacked against the wall. I made the protype (last summer) for the shelving I want to make I just have to build a work bench to have the production capability to build all the shelving bits.

DECEMBER 30, 2012 @ 08:40 AM

New years resolution recap: I'm not going to be able to post this blog tomorrow and none of the results are going to change in that time anyway.

so

1- Sort out the lower trim on my car, do paint touch ups and get it re-appraised.
I did weld a strip of metal into the recess for the lower trim to blend it in with the rest of the body, I didn't manage to do all the paint touch ups and didn't start dealing with the front fenders. I haven't gotten the car re-appraised.
So I guess I half completed that one.

2- Buy an all aluminium radiator for my car and start hunting down a new motor and transmission.
I got behind trying to do ^^#1 and didn't get around getting quotes for the custom rad. Then I had some electrical trouble and the mechanic I use let me down, not really his fault, but still; and I ended up getting a new car from a family member. I'm going to have to find a new home for my car I love and have had for 15 years, because I can't keep it.
So that one's a Failure.

3- Keep up on front page sets. I got behind a couple of times and was on the second page of them on the PICS link until Vice Silver Rain I admitted to myself I wasn't going to be able to keep up at that point and knew I was going to start skipping sets. I did check out the next set to go live as it was Venom Khaleesi which she and P_Mod did a great job on.
Failure, but thanks for all the effort all the SG's put into their sets, the are loved by the members, don't let the rude under apreciative people get you down.

4- Open an etsy store/page what ever it's correctly called and sell something. I did my year of 2011 record keeping and don't like how little is coming in from places other than my job.
I did open and etsy store. WLMCreations I haven't sold anything yet. I'm going to drop the prices on the two jewerly boxes soon. At the moment I have them priced base on how long it took me to build. That is a recognized problem in wood working that you can't make money on jewerly boxes, trays, cutting boards, that sort of simple stuff because it takes a few hours to make a nice small box and no one wants to pay $XX/ hour shop time for that. They will pay thousands of dollars for a kitchen at $XX/ hour, so shops make kitchens. I thought I would get more searches that showed people the leather battery holsters, but I guess no one is looking for one.
So another half completed.

5- Make modular shelving for my place.
I wanted to finish the car stuff before I built the work bench I wanted to have before building the shelving as it has a lot of pieces and it would have been a pain to build with out a decent bench.
Failure.

6- Have more sex.
Failed to meet or exceed sex quota

7- Take one of my coffee tables to 'Studio 201' and see if they are interested in selling them.
I took one of my tables down there, it got to the point where I had to throw out a number and it's hard to go back up if you low ball your self. I went too high, too high enought that it ended the conversation, and they didn't throw back a counter offer. I know someone who sells drapes and blinds and he asks from time to time about them. My mom's cousin is apparently intrested but hasn't ordered one or anything.
Suceeded, oddly

DECEMBER 22, 2012 @ 04:46 PM

For a while now I've been wondering what percentage of people are naked on the internet. It seams the National (American) campain to prevent teen and unplanned pregnancy, was wondering too, because they did a survey. Link

It's not really the full answer as they asked 1,280 people age 13-26 that were all living in the United States, included 'sent electronicly' and it was done in the fall of 2008. But they came up with 22% of girls 13-19, 18% of boys 13-19; 36% of women age 20-26, 31% of men age 20-26.

There's 20 pages of stuff to look threw, more stats, how they asked the questions was interesting. They asked about how many people had social networking pages, which was 89% of the people surveyed and asked how many write/update a personal blog 29%.

Ignoring the fact I'm a year older than the age bracket they looked at 4 years ago, it's interesting where I fit in.

I think this blog needs a picture, this should cover it fairly well wink

Edit: There was a bit of debate on my part which of two pictures to use, so I'm using both
