I wanted a castle model for the game that looked like something that could have actually existed in 11th century Germany. Problem is, all those castles got remodeled, burnt down, added onto, and knocked down again.

If there's still a castle in Germany (or Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, or Latvia) that looks like it did in the 11th century, I couldn't find it online, So I ended up starting from the ones that were knocked down once, left in ruins, and building my own to look like those.

This one still needs crenels, a gatehouse, some inner buildings, maybe a staircase or two and some arrow loops. But that's the basic shape of it. Halfway between the giant 13th century welsh castles we've all seen in pictures, and the wooden hill forts that dominated the age. It's got the basic sense and shape of those wooden motte & bailey forts.

Vauban is a bit too late for what you want. The Dark Ages being what they were, there isn't a whole lot written about defenses from that time, though it was a major topic as things settled down.

It strikes me that there are a few in the North of England that weren't changed that much and I'm sure there has to be a history of the Tower of London that documents its configuration at various points.

I think you're on the right approach. Photos of stuff from the Salian and Hohenstaufen periods don't seem to fit what I would expect. A period of transition in construction. Nice link to Vauban, obd.

Is it for a card ? It would be cool if you could have little plastic transparencies to go over it to simulate the remodeled, burnt down, added onto, and knocked down again.
