i think the default disposition of someone with depression includes the melancholy feelings and hopeless outlook; yet, it can take on a different shape depending on the person's thoughts. much like the default disposition of clay is to be an amorphous pile of goo, the artist must make a conscious effort to bring it to life -- it's still clay, but it now has form.

however, you're absolutely right, it does take a lot of convincing, and at every step along the way -- no free lunch. i'm just learning now how to begin control it. it's not always easy, and it is oft that i fail. yet, i think the whole thing is like trying to break any other vice -- one must decide that they want to become better. i don't know if i've ever consciously made such a declaration. i'm hoping this time though, things will be different. we shall see...
