For the Darkness in my Heart,
You have taught me how to not feel ashamed about my sexuality and desires by showing me how to be secure in myself, even when it meant putting aside politeness to oppose the bludgeonous statements of others. You inspire me to travel, to educate myself, to explore and experience my curiousities. You challenge me to write with structure instead of free verse. You gave me support and generousity when I was stubborn and broke. You showed me how to see the beauty in people that we have been blind to because of the media’s propaganda that ‘ideal beauty’ is not androgyny, and certainly not what we identify as human defects. Even when I would break into patterns of irrational tantrums, that made me certain I had pushed your limit of tolerance, you were patient.
The Maori believe that the Pikuroa symbol signifies the spiritual merge between the souls of two people for eternity. Their belief is that although people will take on different paths, they will always be connected and return to each other.
I have no hopes or intentions for us except this: That in our lifetime, for however many times we become distant, we will always be open to the chance to reconnect.
Yet, I want you to know that I will still be content if we are not, or ever, geographically together. For I will always be grateful to you for our stream of raw consciousness conversations, that have been as whimsical as Rain in the Sunshine. It is this that will always be geographically with me--literally--as ink on skin.
