It's much more early Malick. While I actually love The Thin Red Line (but didn't care for The New World), it lacked the fluid, aggressively ponderous tone of those films, and was much more reminiscent of Days of Heaven/Badlands, in the haunting beauty of the images and even thematically in some ways.

It also brought to mind Heaven's Gate a bit, which is immediately interpreted as an insult based on what that film has come to represent, but in retrospect, there are a lot of positive things about that movie, and the comparison definitely fits in terms of the late Hollywood New Wave quality of Assassination. Not a perfect film by any means, but one from this year that deserved a bit more recognition.
