Could Contain Spoilers, be careful.

So I saw "The Dark Knight" at a midnight screening on Friday. Let me first say that I thought the film was fantastic, and The Joker performance was stunning along with Commissioner Gordon, and a lot of the other supporting cast members. The realistic environment was beautifully crafted and the photography was lovely. All that being said, there were a bunch of moments in the film that almost killed the movie for me:

- The dialog from the Jokers henchmen during the opening scene was terrible and completely unneeded. The actions were great but when you are trying to base this story "in real life" you gotta loose the comic book dialog.
- Maggie Gyllenhaal was terrible. I felt like every time she was on screen she was chuckling at the fact that she was cast in this movie. Compared to a lot of the other performances she stood out like a sore thumb.
- My biggest issue was Christian Bale's performance as Batman. As Bruce Wayne he is great. He brings in the best elements of American Psycho and plays the spoiled rich kids extremely well. But as soon as you put the mask on him and he puts on the out of breath deep voice, I cringed in my seat. How can the director hear his voice in dailies and go…"Yes, yes that is great!"

Overall the film was amazing, but these issues nearly pulled me out of a film that I wanted to stay in for the entire 2 ½ hours. It's a difficult thing to take a story that is comic books themed, and over the top, and make it real. I feel like they almost did it. Great movie though. See it for yourself and tell me I'm full of shit.

Well, consider this. If your face was squeezed into a mask that covered your nasal region and pulled your nose upward, you might talk a little funny too.
The henchmen dialogue wasn't so bad - if anything, it served as a short 5min transition between TDK and 'Begins.' It did reflect the "comic book type dialogue" a bit much compared to the rest of the movie, but how do you compare that with Gordon's speech at the end?
My issue with Maggie/Rachel was that compared to Katie's stint as the character, Maggie was more of a wuss. Katie's Rachel was a gutsy chick that had a backbone. I didn't get that from Maggie. She just looked like a lost puppy.

Funny how I thought some of the same thing. tongue

-The beginning to me brought you straight into Joker fucking madness, clown masks and each one being told to kill the other... I thought they were all fucking crazy, and apparently one of them was shocked and yes I'm a comic book dork.

- The love interest girl was pretty blah, I don't know why but she just wasn't really trying to be Bruce Wayne's childhood sweetheart much. I was somewhat surprised and delighted by what the joker pulled though tongue

-The scary batman voice was pretty lame, I had a problem with that in the first movie too.

-Joker was amazing, maybe the fact that he was just a little older than me when he died is what really bothered me. I have never seen him in a film (that I can remember anyway) and I am taking his acting ability on this movie. He was a true actor in my book, not just a celebrity.

I don't think Christian Bale will ever match the American Psycho performance. He is brilliant in that movie, but as Batman, he was my biggest peeve of the movie. The henchmen in the beginning made me go...'oh no I waited how long to see this'.....but Ledger pulled it off and the movie was pretty good.

Also annoyingly....Bale is looking a little like Tom Cruise, from a distance, I was half drunk maybe....I dunno, he really irked me....I mean really really irked the hell out of me. I actually had to go sit in the loo I got so irritated and well the movie was pretty long. But as Batman he is flat and boring and ugh, what a disappoinment. I'll have to re-watch Psycho to appreciate him again.

Heath kicked ass. Fir shure.

In not so many words, I concur.

Hi, I was avoiding the blog as the film isn't out here yet! Are you still producing any sets for the site or doing more personal work? I was away for a while but hope you might be making some more amazing picture sets!

I agree on the first scene. The rest of it I didn't notice too much. I mean, Batman's voice, I tried to think of it this way - If he sounded like Bruce Wayne it would be easier to indentify him - but that doesn't really explain why it sounds that way.

I was impressed with Heath Ledger's performance though, and I was one of those people that thought his casting in the movie was a bad idea. I just didn't think he could pull it off. I'm glad I was wrong, and instead of ruining the movie he seems to have done the opposite. That's impressive.
