Let me tell you about my job.......HERE'S A TIP

Here's a tip to all the people who think they know how to dine and tip....but do you really?

1. IF you can afford to go out to eat... But you can't afford to tip... hey.. guess what.. you can't afford to go out to eat.

2. This is 2007 people. 10% is not acceptable anymore... standard tipping for GOOD service is between 18 and 20%... if you get great service--> oh, look! The percentage just went up!

3. Now. I understand that 10% is good enough for God... That's fine.. but this isn't church.. and you're not tithing.

4. PS- ordering a well done steak... which everyone in the south does... will constitute a longer ticket time.... you will be okay... if you wanted fast food, you should have gone through a fucking drive-thru... (Squirrelly note: If you order a filet well done, I will hand you a slim jim and eat the 30 dollar steak myself. Thanks)

5. It's really not necessary to snap at me or wave your hand in the air like your having a spasm or get up and follow me. I saw you, I acknowledged you, you saw me... hold the fuck on. and sit the fuck down. I am coming.

6. When I take the time to be courteous and introduce myself... please don't be a rude bastard and cut me off. Sometimes the place I work at requires me to tell you about the specials and offer you an appertizer...When I ask you how you are doing please don't reply with what you want to drink... manners, asswipe.

7. I follow a strict rule that you should never reward bad service with a good tip... however, you should also never punish excellent service with a shitty tip because you're cheap.

8. Please don't take it out on me because you have had a bad day.. I'm here to make it better. relax.

9. When I deliver your food and ask if there is anything else.. you can tell me... I asked didn't I... don't get all bent out of shape because I'm not psychic and cannot read your mind.. how the hell am I supposed to know you needed A1. Also, please tell me the moment I ask everything you need. If you have to think about it that's okay..I'll wait. I'd rather spend a few more moments at your table then running back and forth to the kitchen because you forgot you needed extra something or other.

10. I know sometimes you can't help it.. But do you really have to ask for something every single time I walk past the table... I mean really. Jessica Simpson is not even that high-maintenance. If you do this to me, I expect a larger tip than you planned on for my already great service.

11. Hi. look around you. You are one of probably twenty people I am waiting on.. Did you happen to notice that.. So if you have to wait for a minute.. Be patient.. I promise I will take care of you..

12. Treating a server like a piece of shit and the scum of the earth because we are serving you is the quickest way to get the worst service you ever thought possible.. We are people too and you are no better than me... I don't give a fuck what you do.

13. Just think about it like this. Your tip left on the table is how I pay my bills. I am making 2.13 an hour.. So no. I don't get a paycheck. After taxes and claiming tips I'm lucky if I even see one. Remember that next time you decide to be cheap. Please also remember when using a curbside take away service, that the people that bring out your food don't always make 7 or 8 dollars an hour. Most of the time they work for tips too.

14. Don't assume that my job is easier then yours and I am some dumb shit who can't get a better job. The restaurant business is a fast paced environment with a high stress level. And you don't even see all the things we do behind the scene. So have some respect. I don't come to your office and treat you like shit for sitting on your ass all day do I?? No. I don't.

15. Most people do not know that we pay taxes based upon what we claim to make. News flash, we have to claim at least about 10% of our sales. Often times we often must tip out other workers in the restaurant i.e. busers and hosts. What this means is if your are one of the scum of the earth that don't tip I just paid taxes on your meal that I worked to serve you. Thus meaning that I just paid to serve you. Better yet, if you walk out on your tab, chances are I just paid for you meal! Karma people...Karma

You forgot one!

16. When I ask what you like to drink please answer and do not wait to get thirsty one at a time whenever you see me serving a drink at your table! It is less walking and ttrouble for me if you order all the drinks together and more socially if you can then toast and drink together as well instead of in shifts! wink

German travelguide books still mention the 10% and therefore Germans when in the US tip often exactly 10%.

In Germany tips are mostly smaller but taxfree and waiters in the place I work get at least 7 Euro/h

Spanish and French customers are known to hardly tip at all or not at all while leaving the table a mess and the whole tipping concept seems also hard to understand for most Chinese....

I always tip 20%, unless I have gotten terrible service (in which case it's more like 15%), or I am a regular customer of the establishment, in which case I tip a little extra.

My standard is 1/6 and round up. Exceptional service (or if I know my party has been high maintenance) goes up from there. If it's a place that pools tips with bartender and bussers, etc. take that into consideration also. I usually add a dollar a drink (uhh, alcohol people, not sodas - but things like smoothies or shakes count, since they have to be made), unless they're horrible or I have to wait so long that I really notice how long it's taking (like if the place is empty and it still takes a while).

If a server is clearly having a bad day, but is still putting in a good effort to please my party, I'll add a bit on for that and try to acknowledge that their other tables are being a pain-in-the-ass/unreasonable and I'm not holding today's service against them if it's a bit down as a result. If they're clearly short-staffed and my server is picking up the slack, I'll add on a bit because I assume that they're gonna get bad tips from other tables sometime during the shift because it's tough to please everyone and you should be rewarded for doing a good job, especially when your coworker made it tougher on everyone by not showing.

If I used a coupon or some sort of special or they give a comp drink or dessert (for birthday or whatever), still tip as though that's part of the total.

On the other hand, if a server makes it clear that I am nowhere on their list of priorities, I'll go down to 10%, but it takes some pretty god-awful service to get there and I feel bad doing it. It's pretty rare for me to go that low and a once-every-five-years thing to go lower than 10. I waited tables in high school and college (nothing high-class or worth continuing as a career choice), and know that it's a physically demanding job, not to mention tense and emotionally taxing to put up with coworkers and customers (even the reasonable ones). You have to be pretty bad to get a below-average tip from me.

I waited tables for a class for Free! made the food from scratch and served it all for free! I made zero zilch and zip. I did not like waiting on tables at all. For one thing I have zero none not even a smigen of patience. I would be thinking god cant these fuckers eat faster? I been standing around here 15 min and there yammering away blah blah blah...I did also got the finger snapper customer who just happen to be as gay as fucking gay could be....What an annoying fucker! I could not wait to be through with him! He was very very snappy and demanding asking for several refills every few min...Guess what I left his table after his entree and never came back! I was like fuck EM! I toally never came back....He paid for desert and never got it and He had the nerve to say i was the worst server ever! I thought he was the gayest annoying fuck ever!
