Thom Yorke needs to try harder.

Possibly, he might trying being less modal. It gets tiring because modal progressions all seem to sound alike after a few numbers.

Cock-tangle.

Currently compiling tracks for a compilation of Nine Inch Nails rip-off/soundalike bands from the mid-to-late nineties.

When you're a music collector, you have to find ways to make the hobby challenging or else you just find yourself wandering record stores in search of nothing in particular.
Having something to raid the used bins for is essential.

There's really no destination for my homemade anthology other than for my own satisfaction. They really don't collect micro-genres they way they should. I mean, Nuggets brought out the compiler in just about every garage rock collector. There are how many volumes of Pebbles, again? Last I checked, it was actually beyond numbers into some sort of alien counting technology. Collecting the gajillion discs of that set is actually comparable to buying the OOP 45s themselves. Then there are the compilations that pass quality control entirely and just go by region. Have to say that I do understand the purpose, just frown upon the practice.

Next time I talk to my Dad, I'll have to pester him about completing his Southern Rock anthology. He's missing some Barefoot Jerry and Grinderswitch. I've told him he needs to go crate digging then record the selected songs from the turntable into AIFF or something. I don't think he's really the collecting type, though. He does try; I'll give him that.

I put together a decent collection of Glam/Glitter rock awhile back. Here and there, I happen upon a band that I was totally ignorant of and the list of songs becomes stronger. Up until a week ago, I had no idea that Be Bop Deluxe started out as a glam band. The reissues are stickered with hype that proclaims them to be a blend of Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen. Those stickers usually stretch the truth, but I actually agree with that band formula.
To somewhat contradict all of that, I prefer the later Power Pop-meets-Prog songs like "Ships in the Night" to the earlier Glam stylings.

The best way to beef up the NIN comp would probably be to add contemporary artists that aped his style for a record during Trent's brief stay as Alt-Rock figurehead during the mid-nineties. Bowie did "Outside." Gary Numan did some albums that sounded like he'd switched gears and was influenced by a fellow that was in turn influenced by his eariler work. Rob Halford did his Two record, "Voyeur." There's the Prick album...
That leads me to a big judgement call, do I include stuff that Reznor produced? Two and Prick sound NINish specifically because of Trent's hand.
Also, is including one-off soundalike tracks fair? Sparklehorse really only one track that I'm aware of that sounded similar ("Pig").
I'm thinking that I'll leave out the Garbage-like bands like Curve.
Self is really more like an Eels-type band (anyone notice that many of Dreamworks first signings were along this line?), but they've got a track or two that fits.
Then there's the entire Coldwave subgenre. A number of bands where clearly "Broken" devotees, but others were more like Ministry and KMFDM take-offs. Still more were looking to be Fear Factory with more electronics. A few were older acts that just threw in some prominent guitar and called it a day (I'm thinking of Frontline's "Millenium" and Skinny Puppy's "Rabies." The latter was a superior album because it came more out of collaboration with Jourgensen than anything. Leeb was merely looking to bandwagon jump. Hijacking entire Pantera songs doesn't really make it, Bill.).

I suppose this all sounds a fair bit excessive and certainly obsessive, but I need things like this to keep my collector's need occupied. Otherwise, I end up with stacks of office supplies that I'll never use (my other impulse buy outside of music). I really don't need any more fucking pens or steno pads.

Tonight I met a legend.

I may never be the same.

And if I am, then I may never be saved.
