One Perspective

"This place is a prison
And these people aren't your friends.
And you can case the ground
From the Cascades to Puget Sound
But you are not permitted to leave."

Update! Update! Update!

I've started my job/temporary assignment with the United Way. It's really great. I get to go around to people at their workplaces, tell them about all the cool stuff the United Way does, tell them about this friend of mine who came to Maine from Rwanda as a refugee and was helped by the United Way, and then encourage them to donate. It's like the best job ever. I've always hated public speaking and been terrified of it, but now I'm starting to find out that if I really care about the suject, not only do I like it, I'm actually really, really good at it. The other people in the program even elected me to go speak on their behalf at a United Way board of directors meeting. It feels great.

In less positive news, the shoe finally dropped at my regular job this month. They told me officially that I'm being laid off, effective December 31. It's a little depressing, but at the same time, I've been feeling that it's time for me and my employer to part ways. People at United Way are helping me shop my resume around, and hopefully I'll be able to get a job through them, maybe even a better one. Maybe even one working for a local housing agency, which I would really love.

In personal news, Katie and I are approaching 3 months, and still going strong. I couldn't be happier. Life is good and I feel ready for anything.

That's all I got. Word to your moms.

PICTURES!!! PICTURES!!! PICTURES!!!

Yeah, that's right, I finally got a camera phone. First things first:

New love... aint it grand?
Katie and I are taking the holiday weekend and going to Providence to look at museums, eat in bistros, and stay in the sweetest little Bed and Breakfast you ever saw in you life.

Tune in later for major job news!.

This whole "auto-comment" thing on sets... I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who finds it obnoxious.

Saw the funniest thing on the way home from work today. An Escalade with the license plate, "BGJONSN". *eye roll* Oh brother. Is someone overcompensating?

I also have this annoying advertising jingle stuck in my head. It goes "nine-six-seven, eleven, eleven, come to Pizza Pizza, hey hey hey!" It's the "hey hey hey" that gets me.

I've been playing fantasy baseball this season. If you don't care about baseball, you are permitted to skip this entry entirely. For lack of anything meaningful to say, here's my team roster:

C: B. McCann, ATL
1B: P. Fielder, MIL
2B: B. Phillips, CIN
3B: T. Glaus, TOR
SS: M. Tejada, BAL
OF: M. Ramirez, BOS
OF: C. Lee, MIL
OF: J. Damon, NYY
DH: V. Wells, TOR
BN: C. Jones, ATL

SP: C. Capuano, MIL
SP: J. Lackey, LAA
RP: B. Fuentes, COL
RP: T. Coffey, CIN
P: B. Penny, LAD
P: A. Harang, CIN
P: L. Hernandez, WAS
BN: C. Ray, BAL
BN: C. Janssen, TOR
BN: R. Clemens, HOU
BN: B. Sheets, MIL
BN: A. Burnett, TOR

Aside from the fact that Clemens, Sheets, and Burnett have basely pitched 9 innings among them, what do you think? Once I get those three back, do you think I'll be doing okay?

OKay, okay. I know someone put a lot of work into this new layout, and I don't want to complain about their hard work. But there are some things that irk me about the new format.

1. On the front page, that little applet window with the new sets in it sure is flashy, but you can't see the names without clicking on the set. You used to be able to just go to the front page, and bam! last four sets, right there with names and titles. Now you have to click on them to see the names, you get confused over which one came last, they all move around when you select them... I miss the old setup.

2. The random picture generator. If it's still here, I can't find it. I miss it.

3. The user profiles are convoluted. It took me about an hour to figure out how to update this blog, and it's a lot of extra clicks to do it now.

In short, I like the old page better. Maybe if they could fix some of those issues, I'd like the new format more. It certainly is slick. But it's a lot less functional.
