I lived in Philadelphia my whole life and they played once(opening for the Datsuns), moved to Los Angeles and they've played four shows that I would've gone to in the Philadelphia/New Jersey area in as many months. At least I got to see one of them, and it was fucking amazing.
I was really lucky, I scrapped together enough money right around the time that 'We Have You Surrounded' came out that basically the girlfriend and I were able to take a two week vacation, catch them twice out east and then get back to L.A. just in time to see them play the Troubador. By that time Mick recognized me on site. The Philadelphia show was fucking insane, which was amazing since we had previously caught them in Washington D.C. and the club's sound sucked. But they were dead on and we arrived early so I got to talk to Mick for about ten minutes before the show, then ran into Ko(female guitarist) who was kind enough to pose for pictures and chat, and then ran into Troy(bassist) who wound up hanging out with our group for about an hour before they went on and another half hour afterwards. At least at every single set we saw them go insane, I've never seen a band so consistently incredibly high energy in back-to-back shows. There's video here over on the MySpace fan blog of the Philly gig at Johnny Brenda's. Ben Blackwell who is the younger drummer who does most of the real bring the house down stage shit wound up climbing up to the balcony and swinging from the lights before jumping back down to the stage to end their second encore. Talking to Mick and Troy after the show they were both really amazed by how into the crowd was, very pumped up to see it since Philadelphia doesn't have a real good rep for being kind to honest to god non-hipster/ironic rock n' roll bands. I'll let you know if I get around to posting pictures form the show in a couple of days, it was a sight, boy.
Very strange the timing of my moving back to Philadelphia, my best friend just quit his band who had played a series of amazing shows at Johnny Brenda's right after the Dirtbombs were there. And the day before we set out on the cross country drive The Dirtbombs play Philly again. It's like they waited for me to leave the city before it was safe to perform there.
i want to go to the show. but it's got shows lined up for Sunday (Boris, Torche Nachtmystium) and Monday (Yakuza/Indian big band collabo) working against it. but hope is alive, as all the related womenfolk in the crew are out of town.
