So some news about Hit Play. I've written a few columns here, and had a blast. You readers are awesome - both the gamers and non-gamers keep piping up with something to say, and it's a privilege to write for you all. So good news/bad news: I got picked up and I get to keep writing! And the bad news ain't that bad: I'm going to go biweekly, so the next one runs next week.

Meanwhile - what's everyone playing? I'm going through, believe it or not, my first runthrough of Final Fantasy VII, and I'm kind of digging it, even though I knew a pretty giant spoiler going in.

I have been playing Mercenaries 2, Punch Out on Wii, and New Super Mario Brothers.

I will have to get FF VII at some point.

Congratulations on being picked up.

Hmm what am I playing? I'm pretty stuck on my DS lately: GTA Chinatown Wars, Re-running Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You. I'm also re-doing RE4 on the Wii.
If I could afford to fix my computer, I'd be playing Left 4 Dead and Spore but it crashes everytime I run something. So upgrade time. Bleh.

The problem is, is that my computer used to run all of those beautifully. Hell I could run Bioshock on it's highest settings. But something is wrong with my power supply that causes it to shut down a lot. So yeah. Gotta wait.

Another DS Game I'm a little addicted to is Animal Crossing.

I think it is a ton of fun, but I am biased, as I love the original. (Hell, I still play the NES version from time to time.)

If you didn't care for the prequels, you still won't like this version.

If you never played the old Punch-Out games, I am not sure if you would like it or not. I think it's fun, but I could see the gameplay putting some people off.

It is not a revolutionary title. They took the old game, tweaked the gameplay slightly, added some new modes, and significantly updated the presentation (while still keeping it silly and cartoony.)

fantastic news. i really enjoy your columns.

honestly? i'm still playing Fallout 3. i've been busy modding it to hell and back, trying to increase the difficulty. amusingly, most of the mods intended to accomplish that end up making the game easier, because they almost all increase damage and the effects of damage. since i'm a sneaky bastard who uses a hit-and-run combat style, increasing the damage helps me more than it does the bad guys.

there are several interesting mods that remove the ability to instantly heal by eating/drinking, and add in the need to eat, drink, and sleep in order to maintain your character. unfortunately, most of them seem to be more trouble than they're worth, probably because the default time scale is 1:30 (1 hour of realtime for 30 hours of game time). you end up having to eat and drink and sleep so frequently that you don't have time to kill things. also, most of those mods are extremely buggy.

the coolest mod so far has been Mart's Mutant Mod, which adds a HUGE number of variant creatures and even a few new/old creatures (eg floaters and wanamingoes). so far, this mod has had the greatest effect on game difficulty, because it gives many of the mobs a variety of useful perks, causes mobs to respawn in zones they don't normally respawn in (hello, fire ants!), and scales the ability scores of mobs with your level.

congrats on getting picked up =]
i think ffVII is one of those games that has a timelessness to it.
like ocarina of time.
which reminds me actually, i need to finish my ffVII game and move onto zelda again tongue

Thanks for bringing some decent writing around these parts. I was beginning to get cranky.
