So, today while shopping for liquor with a a friend (which I realize makes me totally look like an alcoholic smile; I'm not, this is a once a semester thing), he told me about a Mexican beverage called Sangrita (so not confuse with the Spanish SangrĂa, which is a different thing). Sangrita is a mix of tomato, orange and lime juice with a splash of pepper people in Mexico drink alongside their tequila shot (you drink a shot of sangrita, hold it in your mouth, and wash it down with a tequila shot). I tried it out, and indeed, it's glorious, especially if you like salty and sour tastes together (like, say, on a Bloody Mary, which I fucking love).

Being a lazy bastard, I thought how cool would it be to consume the sangrita and the tequila together (indeed, it's another way to drink it: just mix the two, one part each). Thing is, sangrita isn't a beautiful beverage: in fact, it's butt-ugly, so just mixing it with tequila doesn't cut it as far as presentation goes. So I decided to layer the tequila on top of the sangrita, and came up with this:

(note: there are like, a thousand sangrita recipes on the internet. I used a pretty generic one: 2 parts of tomato juice, 1 part of orange juice, 1/2 a part of lime juice, and a splash of Tabasco)

Bloody Mexican
0.6 oz. | 2 cl. tomato juice
0.3 oz | 1 cl. orange juice
0.15 oz. | 0.5 cl. lime juice
1 splash of Tabasco
0.8 oz. | 2.5 cl. tequila

Add the tomate, orange and lime juices, and the Tabasco sauce, to a shot glass and mix them. Lay the tequila on top of the mix.

The quantities are kinda weird in oz. due to the conversion. An easier way to do it is mix a big batch of sangrita, fill half a shot glass with it, and layer the tequila on top of it until the glass is full.

So... it still looks pretty awful biggrin But it's a cool awful, like coagulated blood on the bottom of a bucket of blood serum. I'll serve these on Halloween, I think smile Plus, it tastes really, really good.

It's been a while since I've posted anything here. A recent comment by the wonderful Renna (who has a set in member review, check it out) made me realize that yes, people occasionally read this thing, so I'm going to post a recipe (a classic, in fact) for the 3 or 4 people who read this:

Cosmopolitan
1 1/2 oz. | 4.5 cl. vodka citron
1/2 oz. | 1.5 cl. triple sec
1/2 oz. | 1.5 cl. lime juice
1 oz. | 3 cl. cranberry juice

Add all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into large cocktail glass. Garnish with lime slice.

It's quite sour in taste. Also, the cranberry juice is there for color more than taste, so you can add more or less depending on how pink you want your cosmo to look.

Another recipe for you:

Blue Lagoon
1 1/3 oz. | 4 cl. vodka
2/3 oz. | 2 cl. blue curacao
1/3 oz. | 1 cl. lemon juice
Lemon-flavored sparkling water

Pour the vodka, the blue curacao and the lemon juice on a highball glass (10 oz.) filled with ice, and mix them. Then add the sparkling water.

Just tried making a layered drink with blue curacao on the botton, Bailey's in the middle, and cranberry juice on top (I was going to baptize it the Bleau, Blanc, Rouge). Unfortunately, the cranberry juice weights more than the Bailey's, so it didn't work out. A shame, because the resulting brownish glob that it ended up being tasted great.

Already slightly tipsy due to my failed experiment (unlike a professional bartender, as an amateur I can afford to get drunk on the job; plus, I'm paying for the damn liquor, so wasting it isn't an option), I googled about layering drinks and found out that yeah, cranberry juice won't layer over Bailey's. I also found out that grenadine is really heavy, and vodka really light, so... The Kzar was born!

The Kzar
1/2 oz. | 1.5 cl grenadine
1/2 oz. | 1.5 cl blue curacao
1/2 oz. | 1.5 cl vanilla-flavored vodka

Pour the grenadine on a shot glass, layer the curacao over it, and the vanilla vodka over the curacao. It ends up looking like this:

Tastes good, sweet with a fruity flavor at the end due to the grenadine, and a warming sensation due to the vodka. Still doesn't look 100% right (the blue curacao and the vodka are kinda blurry between the two). Next time, I'll try adding a little milk (which is really light) to the vodka, see if I can get a better effect (I could use just milk, but I don't dare to make a Russian-themed drink without vodka). I'll also try serving it on a vodka glass, it'll look better (since in my normal shot glass the same amount of liquid has different heights, due to the its shape).

Just had a good old Mojito

1 oz. | 3 cl. lime juice
1 1/2 oz. | 4.5 cl. light rum
2 teaspoons of sugar
10 to 20 leafs of mint

Muddle the mint with the sugar and the lime juice. Add rum and top with soda water on a collins glass (12 oz.) with some ice. Garnish with a mint sprig, and serve with a straw (don't forget the straw, it's kinda unpleasant drinking without it due to the mushed mint).

This one is called Blue Sapphire:

1 oz. | 3 cl. blue curacao
6 oz. | 18 cl. cranberry juice

Pour both ingredients into a collins glass filled with ice cubes. Stir and serve.

Tastes sweet and fruity, with a very, very slight bitter aftertaste. I could drinks gallons of this on a hot, sunny day, which isn't surprising, since it's mostly cranberry juice.

My life isn't particularly interesting, and I'm not into blogging menial, day-to-day stuff. But there is one thing about me that's at least mildly interesting: I'm a rather good drink mixer, for an amateur. So I'll be posting interesting recipes as I drink them, with an attached photo of the concoction if possible.

So, to start, a Blue Mountain:

1 1/2 oz. | 4.5 cl. dark rum
3/4 oz. | 2 cl. vodka
3/4 oz. | 2 cl. coffee liqueur
1 oz. | 3 cl. orange juice

Shake in iced cocktail shaker & strain. Serve in a cocktail glass (4.5 oz).

I have no idea why it's called Blue Mountain, since it's clearly brownish-orange, as you see from the picture. Tastes great, though: smooth, and sweet but nor overwhelmingly so.
