"I can't tell if you're serious or not," said the driver.
"I won't know myself until I find out whether life is serious or not," said Trout. "It's dangerous, I know, and it can hurt a lot. That doesn't necessarily mean it's serious, too."

-Kurt Vonnegut, Breakfast of Champions

The last full week was destined to be arduous, but I didn't expect it to be emotional as well. A co-worker committed suicide last week, and a large portion of the command is traveling up to Greenville for the funeral tomorrow. The entire affair will last 12 hours (trip included). My department handles local service member mortality cases, but I was out of the office the week it happened so I was uninvolved with more trying tasks like coordinating with local authorities and identifying the remains.

Navy suicides are so goddamned weird. We lost a shipmate a couple of years back who killed himself, on Father's Day, because he was having a hard time adjusting to an intense training program. Not even a year ago, a friend, a man who many looked to for support, took his own life on duty in a moment of intense frustration. This latest suicide is just as weird. He was just a kid, not even old enough to drink, but he was apparently going through a divorce and having a difficult time coping with the realities of it. I mean, what the fuck?

It seems like it's always something with the sailors: doing stupid things while extremely intoxicated, committing suicide, or killing each other while extremely intoxicated. Come on, sailors.

And I'm writing all of this while listening to Jawbreaker, and I'm wondering if maybe I caught something? (Oh God, I hope not.) This is simply me writing about a sensitive subject and my feelings, which run the gamut from complacent to perplexed.

People are fucking weird.

Also,

Is this a trick question?

I can definitely understand suicide. I've never been suicidal but I've seen some people in real pain, physical, emotional, or both, and can understand why that may push them to suicide (especially if alcohol or drugs are involved at the time of the decision).

Babe, that's just terrible. I thought dealing with the crackheads in my neighborhood was bad.
Sigh.

On a lighter note, yes - I believe that Fox screen cap is totally a trick question. I mean, who doesn't think about touching private parts?

I used to be really into researching serial killers and I can't stop thinking about touching private parts.
Crispy, I think I'm a anti-social murderizer.

Thank god for FOX News. I think they have answered all of my life's problems.

Meh, death doesn't scare me. Someone forcefully TAKING MY LIFE is something that bothers me, but I know that I may very well die stupidly, like getting hit by a drunk driver or something. Every time I've almost gotten into an accident I just get really calm. I think I just accept that I'm going to die some day. I would prefer that it was on my terms, though. If I get sick I'm going to do everything I can (short of giving up cheese) to get better. If I have to give up cheese, I'll choose to die a delicious death.

Wow, that sucks. It happened a lot when I was going through too. Sailors have a lot of motorcycle accidents too, I never understood that. Maybe we're just accident prone.

See what I did there?

This reminds me of a tale my father told me when I was kid... while stationed on the Enterprise long ago, some random guy went on deck and killed himself. But in the most grisly way possible. I won't write it on here... my dad had to collect his remains though.

Despite feeling suicidal a couple times in my young life, never have I thought about offing myself in the most painful way I can.
