You kind of have to pick a couple people to concentrate on talking to, and ignore everything else.

It takes time to get to know people, and a certain skill to be able to type and read while also thinking about what's going on.

But there are lots of lurkers and people that just read and only occasionally throw a comment out there, so you're good, either way, the one thing to avoid is being obnoxious in general, or trying to get people you don't know involved in private messages, etc.
