today i got the new lawrence weschler free of charge from the good people at knopf.

today i found a signed first edition hardcover copy of nicholson baker's The Mezzanine and a cheap used paperback copy of Carol Emshwiller's Carmen Dog at a book store that's going out of business and is having a sale.

today i found a few pints of the kind of beer my friend--who will be housesitting and caring for emmett while i go home to visit my folks this week.

today the founder of found magazine sent a story to me for the literary website i edit.

today i will read comic books before bed.

toay i will fall asleep on a bed...an actual bed...a real bed...the first i have been able to afford (though barely) since i left college.

today i have a new tattoo on my arm. it says "mom" and "pop".

yesterday i could take or leave. tomorrow is the same. today is okay.

from Governors on Sominex by David Berman

"And out in the city, out in the wide readership,
his younger brother was kicking an ice bucket
in the woods behind the Marriott,

his younger brother who was missing the part of the brain
that allows you to make out with your pillow.

Poor kid."

a poker story from sunday:

"4-way poker game tonight. $20 buy in. tournament style, so the top two players won $20 and $60. within an hour, i was down to $5 and had counted myself out. was playing on tilt.

"but, i hung in. don't know how. won a couple of good hands.

"at 10pm, the game shifted to no-limit from 4-bit, $1 bets. jacks went out first, and i startd to lose again. way too many lousy hands had to be mucked. anothre player started to lose a little faster than me, though, and went all in when i had a five in the hole and two more showing on the flop. so, i matched him. so did the other guy. next card dropped and it was another five. the odds of a four of a kind are 4,164 to one. there was no way anyone could have a better hand. i had what hold 'em players call the nuts.

"so, i said, i'm all in! too soon. it was the other guys bet. he checked, knowing wht i was going to do.

"i pushed my stack in. $18 and some change. figured he'd muck it, as it was clear i had the hand.

"figured wrong. he thought i was bluffing because he called me.

"i'm home now, $40 richer. after that, the game was mine. i bullied him around for a few more hands, and walked away with the pot.

"he had had a couple of nines in the pocket, by the bye. a boat, fives over nines. great hand any other night."
