True Blood

A girlfriend loaned me a big box o' entertainment for while I was laid up after my surgery - in said box was the first season of True Blood. I hadn't ever seen it before, and really only knew it was about vampires... and I'm not really into vampires so much. But, being bored as all heck, I decided to give it a go.

I devoured the entire first season within two or three days. I had to download the other three seasons. A few days later I finished the series. Heckler is a fan of the show as well, and for Christmas he got me 8 of the Sookie Stackhouse novels... I finished them all within two weeks.

I have actually have a reoccurring dream that I am working at Merlotte's... and I'm almost always late for my shift.

I don't know what to do with myself now tongue I'd like to start a new series of books, but I'm feeling a little meh about the books in my collection. The same girlfriend who loaned me True Blood is sending over the Game of Thrones novels next month, but until then... I dunno... I'm considering re-reading the Sookie books.

Questions: Do you like True Blood? If so, who are your favourite characters?

What books would you recommend for me to read next?

True true!
Oooh new books... Read any David Sedaris? I find him hilarious. Also Lord of the Flies, A Clockwork Orange, Brave New World, Animal Farm and Lolita. They're books I think absolutely everyone should read in their lifetime.

I would recommend anything from John Irving... A prayer for Owen Meany, The world according to Garp, The Cider House rules...

I highly recommend the Dresden Files novels. An urban wizard who quotes star wars and plays D&D on his days off, while cleaning the streets of Chicago free of supernatural terrors. Funny, action-filled and the characters keep developing deeper and deeper over time.

I'm with J24U. Dresden Files is a GREAT series. The author's secondary series, The Codex Alera isn't bad either

If you do decide to read the Dresden Files, pick up the book called 'Side Jobs'. It's a collection of Dresden Files short stories and novellettes that each take place between the regular novels. Find out which ones to read between each book before you read them thoug. They aren't crucial to the overall storyline, but they're still fun and they just add more to the character development

I've always been a great fan of Jasper Fforde and Tom Holt - they write some of the best comic fantasy out there at the moment, you should give them a go. After the Game of Thrones books you might want to look at Raymond E Fiest or David Gemmell for some extremely good swords and sorcery epics. biggrin

Oh- and I agree with the Dresden files recommendations. I'd also recommend Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale.

My favorite characters are Anna Paquin's boobies. I'm so glad they're a recurring character!

haha, TB is a guilty pleasure of mine. Soooo much fun! Never read the books, though.

I dug the Game of Thrones series, so I picked up the novels. I got through the first two in a week, but then I found the next one to drag a bit. It might have been less they were sloggy and more the fact they're a billion pages long. tongue

Next? Hunger Games? Dexter? Guillermo Del Toro did a trilogy of vampire novels with the dude who wrote The Town if you want a more bitey bitey version of vampires.

As always, kiss

I love true blood. I was really jealous of Erik's hair in season one.

I've felt the same about the horses. Just watched a documentary called "Buck," it changed the way I see them now. The parents have had a ton of HUGE Belgian Horses (?). I never even once thought about riding one of those M-effers!
So, this might change as do most of my whims, but daaaang.... I'm really feeling it.

Hey lady, glad you are healing nicely and hopefully feeling better every day! I couldn't imagine having to entertain myself for all that time. I love true blood and have never missed an episode the good thing about it is that even if you aren't a huge vampire fan there are so many different types of supernatural beings and new ones popping up all the time to distract you... it's got it all. smile
I agree with Cohen on those classics for reading I love the books she mentioned as well as Catcher In The Rye and The Great Gatsby which they are making into a movie so if you haven't read that now might be the time smile
The Hobbit is one I want to re-read before the movie comes out as well it was a favorite when I was a kid.
Of course you could always re-re-re-re-re-re-read HP... can't go wrong there! wink

I've been a True Blood fan since the show started. I'm concerned that it's getting a little too Twilight-ish, but it's still a good show so far. My favorite character overall was Russell Edgington, the former vampire king of Mississippi. I sure hope he's not gone for good. Somehow I suspect he'll be back. Of the current/recurring characters I like Pam and Lafayette.
