It is nearly 3am and I am not asleep. I've been sitting in my living room watching Netflix and reading about people's experiences with the Ganz/Bernese Osteotomy (which I will be having in exactly two weeks' time).

"...15% of the time the surgery does not work. Additionally some people experience nerve damage, loss of feeling in their leg, the risk of arterial damage from shards of bone that could break off while cutting the pelvis, that most patients require at least 3 pints of blood during the surgery, and the list went on. I left wondering why anyone would possibly go this route?

My surgeon said the same thing. In addition to numbness, loss of use of my foot, loss of leg, etc etc. I know this is all pretty rare, and for every horror story there are more success stories... but I can't help but feel stressed. I'm worried.

I have three orthopedic surgeons for my hip (that's not including the one I see for my shoulders), and only one of them is 85% sure that this procedure will help. Still, I think the surgery is worth the risk, especially considering that I could be in a wheelchair permanently if I went for the total hip replacement over the osteotomy.

Man... why do I do this to myself?

That's a lot to stress over, try not to drive yourself sleepless with worry. Maybe focus on the holiday season ahead with your family to keep from obsessing on the worst-case scenarios.

Surgery is always scary but it's very easy to freak yourself out by reading too much about it, I drove myself crazy when I had to have a procedure on my jaw. My only advice to to avoid reading too many worse cases, helps with the sleeping! Best wishes on your operation! I hope it goes super smoothly and that your recovery is super quick!

You're just working through this! *hugs* It's a heavy load, but you don't have to carry it all at once.

You are going through a serious surgery and just collecting the facts. It's a lot to process and just know that you are loved and a lot of people are here to support you through it...me included smile

I can imagine that this is a scary time for you. Just remember that though there is a 15% chance of something going wrong, there is an 85% chance that this will lead to a major improvement in you life. Those are odds i would take any day. ;-)

Also (fun medical fact I learned recently) endorphins work for the immune system kind of the way adrenaline works for your muscles. So being positive and focusing on the better outcome actually boosts you immune system, decreases recovery time, and makes you healthier all round. :-D So stay positive! You're not going to be just OK after this is all said and done: You're going to be better than ever!

*hugs*

It's only natural to feel stressed out. After all, it is surgery and there are always risks involved. Still, the odds are strongly in your favor. I think you'll be just finesmile

I admit I'd be nervous too, but you've got the odds strongly in your favor. I think after you recover from the surgery you're going to be really glad that you did it.

Two weeks, eh? Just don't stress yourself out. It seems better than the alternative (as you've presented it here).

*hugs* you'll be okay, you have a loving family and are an awesome lady. Nothing can keep you down, but you.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"
