What is television for?

When I first read about this fabulous invention called "television" on your electrical net, I thought it was kind of a mechanized Punch and Judy show. I imagined that the spectators choose what play they want to see, start the television's sophisticated mechanism and then watch the play - or the news or whatever he wants to see. I thought television was mainly used for entertainment (like theater plays) and information (like newspapers).

But it seems I am wrong - many people seem to use it as "background noise box". A female 21th century friend reported me that many people have the television apparatus running all day long, whether they watch or not. She asked a friend why he leaves the apparatus running, he replied "When it's off, I feel lonely" - which is a bit strange because this man lives with his charming wife, three children, a mistress, three cats and a goldfish. (Ok, ok, I made up the mistress and the third cat but you get the idea.) Other people gave similar responses. It seems that many of your coevals use this apparatus not for entertainment but for having a "background noise".

Personally I don't understand this. I wouldn't support a constantly talking box in my apartments. I once had a mistress like this, talking all the time without saying anything, no matter whether I listened or not. I quit her after one week, I couldn't bear it. Of course, I like background music, like a string quartet during breakfast, but that's not the same as a talking box (or mistress). I'm not saying is a vice to let the TV run all day long, I just can't get it.

So, dear readers, could you please answer me two questions:

  • Do you have your television running all day long ?

  • If yes, why ?

When I was a girl I was inclined to let my television sing to me, as a sort of hypnotic substitute for being.

Now, I prefer not to own a television.

I used to let my run all day. Even when I wasn't watching it, it felt like I was being told a story and every half hour I would get a new story.

Now, I rarely have it on.

Actually, it starts to drive me nuts around the hour mark if I'm around one.....

My mother leaves the TV on all day long (and night).

I no longer live with her (thank God!).

That's a great analogy ... I never thought about it like that.
Interesting.

Yes, I have it running all day long, and, yes, it is primarily background noise. Strangely, though, I usually do pay it at least a little attention and always have it tuned to something I would be watching if my back wasn't turned to it so that I can be on this magical computer box.

The reason? I can't stand silence, and for some reason, music is too distracting for me. I guess the "background noise" of the TV is much more banal and unobtrusive than the music that gets into your head and steals your thoughts away.

Haven't had cable, for the tv, in years.

Generally I'll either leave music playing, or if I'm working on design/artwork, I'll put on a movie to watch.

Other then that, generally prefer the quiet of the place.

I don't leave my background noise box apparatus in operational mode as much as I do my desktop electronic digital data retrieval and dispersal unit. Usually, I leave that on to occasionally check my electronic correspondence, or to browse SG when I'm not too busy.

I only watch my "noise box" once in a while. Usually to see the political leaders of our time bicker with each other. Or (what's more often the case) to watch people who are paid by certain political leaders to bicker with the surrogates of their opponent's political leaders. Or to watch sports. Sometimes I'll watch, what's known in our time as, a digital video disc. Talking pictures and whatnot. I'm sure you've witnessed the miracle (or sorcery) of Youtube.

The TV stays off here most of the time. Didn't have a TV at all for seven years, but I did have a computer and watched a lot of dvds...

I am not a fan of television.

I would rather read a good book for entertainment.

Je n'ai pas de télé et ça me fait beaucoup de bien. De plus, j'adore rester en silence dans mon appartement, il y a des jours où je ne mets même pas de musique.
Je trouve que la télévision est un poison.
