You ever wake up in the middle of the night with an epiphany? A thought or idea so strong that it literally snapped you out of your sleep? This happened to me a few nights ago, and I've been reeling from it ever since...
1. I've realized that I've only truly been in love once in my life. Though we are no longer a couple, the love is mutual and very deep, sincere, special, and unique.
2. I have been in love with the idea of love for as long as I can remember. This devotion to a prescribed idea has obscured my ability to see true love for what it really is and really can be. It has made me blindly pursue a concept, a social construct of how we're supposed to behave or what we're supposed to be when we are in love, without considering or scrutinizing its place or meaning to us in our present lives.
3. As I've stopped trying to make this into anything specific, it has become...something more than nothing - something that in many ways is more true to our natures, and more respectful of each other's needs and desires at this time in our lives.
4. If it weren't for the impossibly strong belief I have in this person as an integral part of my life, I might never have realized any of this. And if we'd stayed together, I might never have confronted my fear of losing control, and likely still would not know that life (and love) begins with letting go.
