SUGAR-FREE
DAY 1
Yesterday I decided, after years of empty attempts, to stop consuming sugar for at least 30 days straight, with the intent of weaning myself from it for good. Growing up in the south, sugar has been a daily part of my diet for my entire life. It's been only a handful of days that I've gone without sweet tea throughout my life, so quitting this is quite significant for me.
The Rules: No refined sugars, no artificial sweeteners. Only naturally occurring sugars are allowed, such as fruit. My acupuncturist insists that I go cold turkey and cut out even the natural sugars, so that my body isn't driven to crave sugars, but cutting out fruit just seems wrong, and I am convinced that I can fend off the sugar cravings by eating fruit instead.
Day 1 was rough. I was fine for the first few hours in the day, but by lunch time I was starting to really crave anything sweet. So I ate an apple, which seemed to help...for about an hour. By dinner time I had developed a massive headache that seemed to only get worse as the night went on. I was asleep by 8 PM, and woke up at 10:30 PM with a ferocious migraine, which kept me up until about 3:30 AM (OK, SG chat also helped keep me awake longer than I probably needed to be). Excedrin Migraine saves the day for what will probably become a routine for at least the next week, I'm betting.
And on to Day 2 we go!
