So, how tacky would it be to set up a fund of sorts for close friends and family to put birthday money toward buying a rather expensive piece of clothing that you really want for your birthday?

I've seen it done before but I feel like it's such an awkward thing to be asking. If I were asking them to donate money to a charity in lieu of gifts that would be one thing, but this seems a little impersonal and just well, tacky?

I think it's different if it's for someone's wedding or for someone to go to school or something that is not just a beautifully draped chiffon convertible dress that can be worn as a layered skirt or a top and is on sale for 50% off... (this is me selling it to my parents)

Yeah, anyway, your thoughts?

Go for it. I'm always at a loss when shopping for other people's bday presents. It's nice to have some direction and be able to contribute to a gift the person actually really likes.

If it's what you want and you know no one person has the cash to spend on it, do it.

My mom would have a heart attack if I did that.

Maybe if people ask what you want you can say cash, and explain that you're saving up for the dress.

We did something similar this past Christmas. We asked for money for travel. I had similar misgivings to what you're expressing here, but everyone was really great about. Most folks said they were happy to know what we wanted. Turns out we're both hard to shop for. *shrug*

What would be funny is if you set up a 900 number where people could vote on the answer, then use the proceeds to buy the item.

Do it! If people are offended, they won't participate. It's better for the economy and lowering waste, and isn't as tacky as straight out cash (which I ask for all the time, actually). www.edivvy.com?

I say go for it. I did try this with my family and no one bit (granted I had bought clothes off a friend for a great price and offered to wrap them myself lol). I'd contribute to your fund.
