Long week. Short staffed. Hate it.

Mix-Tape Master (109-144 points)
You are a music evangelist: the person in your network of friends who always has the coolest new song, the one whose iPod gets picked to DJ every party. You understand the art of the segue, how the key to the best mix-tape isn't just the songs you pick, but how they interlock with each other. You also know who the up-and-coming acts are and are quick to recognise where their influences lie and whether they will make it big. You work hard at the pursuit of this knowledge, scouring music blogs, magazines and record stores. Most importantly, you are generous with your passion - and your friends should be very, very grateful. Still, it's always good to get new inspiration for your latest mix.

We started football training on Sunday. Live has meaning again. Yes, I know the season has only just ended but I'd missed those stupid fucks. Plus I get fat real quick so the running around in the sunshine trying not to die is probably good for me. Didn't feel like it at the time. The copious amounts of beer afterwards did feel good at the time though. However they didn't the next day.
There may be a moral about instant gratification in there somewhere
Anyway tonight I went back to the Mass-Observation archive at the University of Sussex to do some more research for my final essay (too much research not enough writing at the moment
) and that was brilliant as well. We'd been before but it wasn't until today that I realised what an incredible tool it could be. I'm going to go back next week for a whole day which will be leaving it pretty short time wise on the writing but I think it will help immensely. Better to cut it fine and make it good then finish early I reckon.
And I can't find the clip I want from A Bridge Too Far. Anyway "A nick of time will do nicely"

2 hours of football + 6 hours of drinking + very little food = massive salt loss and a horrible hangover.
I go in search of bacon. I may be sometime.

I fucking hate my job. Really, really hate it. I don't want to be there and I'm getting tired of pretending to be even remotely interested in it whilst I wait for the end. This week I skived Monday and Tuesday and already this week feels too long. I need to keep up the pretence until September but pretending is pretty exhausting all by itself, I just want to let rip at everyone all the time.
I'm meant to be doing my final piece for college but I really don't feel up for it at the moment. It's meant to be an independent study but I haven't really seen anyone from college for 2 weeks and I've sought of lost the studying vibe. Hopefully I'll be seeing my mates from college this weekend and that'll help me get re-engaged with the thing. If I didn't have to work it'd be easy, I can't wait until I'm at uni and I can prioritise sensibly. Seriously - full time job + evening classes = shed loads of stress, don't do it unless you're really committed to studying.

Enough bragging about how cool I am.
Tonight the House of Commons decided that Britain still wants to be a decent, tolerant and open society.
Debate
The backwards looking got their arse's handed to them. Sometimes the margin wasn't anywhere big enough but that should put this debate to bed for at least another decade.
Yay Enlightenment! Yay Science! Yay Tolerance! Yay The Future!

It's been a while.
Hmm...stuff.
I'm meant to be in the middle of my last piece of work for my college piece of work. I'm doing a fair bit of reading but I feel I should be doing more. There's meant to be some primary research involved so I may be dishing out some questions on here soon. Not sure yet though. Anyway once this is done I've passed and I'm going to university. I better get cracking really hadn't I?
Work is slowly falling apart. Our financial director was made redundant which was shit because he was definitely one of the good guys. Then our sales director got made redundant which was brilliant because he is a prize cock. I don't usually like celebrating other peoples misfortune but I'm so glad I won't be working with him any more that I don't really care. Apparently he is fighting the decision but fuck knows on what grounds because he was fucking useless. Ha. Our IT guy is also leaving to go and live in New Zealand. Unfortunately this means they may employ somebody competent which will be the end of me wasting all my time on the internet at work. The speed of the recruitment process at work means this probably won't happen soon though.
June the fourteenth is seriously bugging me. I have three things I really want to be at but in three completely different places. As the football club end of year do is the one I am essential to that's where I have to be. So I can't be camping in Climping or watching half of Hefner play the 100 Club. Arse. Don't get me wrong the football club do will be brilliant but because I have to be there it feels like I haven't made my own decision and that's a bit frustrating.
This week has mostly been about The Great Escape festival which has been going on in Brighton this week. This is the third year and I'm really gutted I didn't go before on some weird misguided principle which I can't even remember. Anyway it has been great and here are all of the bands which have made it so. I saw more but these are the ones who were really brilliant. Even this is a pretty long list.
Thursday
Doll and the Kicks - first band I saw on Thursday evening. I also saw them acoustic on Friday night and they were brilliant at both shows.
Elle s'appelle - I love me some arty, girl/boy shouty indie pop nonsense. Oh yes I do.
Restlesslist - technically my mates but I'm not sure when they became good. Not quite sure what you'd call their music either.
Okkervil River - I love their last album to the point of madness. Alt-country, americana, whatever you want to call it it's brilliant and they have a great frontman.
Friday
Friday was a bit of a washout as I managed to be in the wrong place a lot of the time. Still managed to see these though.
Slow Club - odd folksiness. And Rebecca has a lovely South Yorkshire accent. South Yorkshire is der sexy.
The Mae Shi - nuts. Disco-punk with something wrong with it. Genius.
Saturday
Saturday was the opposite of Friday. I saw Loads.
Telepathe - synth-pop weirdness. Should be French but aren't apparently.
Times New Viking - loud. Also my favourite band name of the weekend.
Lucy and the Caterpillar - almost to cutesy for me and that takes some doing. Really silly songs
Frightened Rabbit - who I could have sworn were American last night. They aren't but what they play sounds like great mid-90s indie rock.
The Twilight Sad - a band who could only be Scottish. Their debut album is great and they live up to it live.
And then everything else stopped mattering because Nina Nastasia played. Words fail me. Again. We thought of going on after that but couldn't think of anything that would to her and felt it would be harsh to make anyone follow her so we made are way home.
So yeah, new music. It's great. All of that and more for £50. Sometimes this town is brilliant.

I have returned.
And I'm stuck at work with the sun beating down outside. Bastard.
Never mind as I had an incredible week and I'm still really chilled out. Thanks to Ortus and Angel_Ree for putting me up on Sunday and Monday nights.
I have spent an awful lot of time on trains this week and the only time it went wrong is when I decided to be a complete idiot and get on the wrong train in Hull. Britains railways - not too bad shock.
The Pennines are stupidly beautiful. So beautiful I think they might be cheating somehow.
Sheffield is still my favourite city in the world. I'm not sure how they can still be building it though, they should all calm down a bit more. The same goes for Leeds.
Manchester cabbies are rubbish. How the one we got to the restaurant didn't know where the biggest restaurant on Oxford Road was is beyond me. In fact I'm not sure he'd have got to Oxford Road without directions. Oxford Road was brilliant though. So many pubs in such a small space. Thanks to Ortus and Mistress_Paine for an wicked night out, the bacon sarnie in the morning were equally brilliant.
Bridling isn't as bad as Angel_Ree makes out and in the sunshine it's actually quite pretty. Sitting on the beach (with the sand cock) was brilliant.
Pub food is essential to the survival of the country and is generally a lot better then it used to be. Perhaps I shouldn't live on chips though.
I don't get people who don't dance at weddings. Are people really bothered about how they look at these occasions? Dance like a fool and be damned is what I say. Bradford does have an incredible metal club though - man in a cape and a stetson. I salute you.
Now I need another holiday to get over this one.
Not enough of you commented on my adorable younger self. I'm upset now.
Because of that I'm leaving you.
For a whole week.
You'll never cope.
I meanwhile will be on the piss.
For a whole week.
In fact I've started already.
Ha.
Right some of you I'll see. Others I wont. If you're in the North of England (well the south north -Yorkshire and Lancashire mainly, no Cumbrias or anything) and think I'm amazing (frankly who doesn't) try and get in touch.
If you are capable of this feat of communication I may decide that you are worthy of being graced with my presence.
No guarantees though.

I found a use for facebook (not much of one but hey, it had to be good for something)

I haven't seen these photos in years. Anybody have any trouble spotting me? I really haven't changed much in the last 20 years.
Stuff that's happening.
It's my Mums birthday on Monday so much drink will be consumed tonight. Both my sisters are down. I fear for my liver. It's a good thing I haven't got football tomorrow.
Been into town today. On a Saturday. Too many people even though it's only April. Brighton is really beautiful in the sun but it doesn't half draw the crowds. Oh well life's full of compromises.
Anyway bought my Mums presents and got a bunch of books for my independent study. Brighton's new library has leapt straight into my top 10 buildings, it is awesome. A shame we had to get a bunch of horrid chain restaurants to go with it. Another of lifes compromises.
I now have a bunch of serious tomes on the working classes. It's going to be a fun months reading although I did get My Father and Other Working Class Heroes by Gary Imlach which I have wanted to read for ages and I can sort of link it to my subject so that's good.
Right now the suns out, I had an early night last night and I'm wondering if I can justify a beer right now? Hmm.

It dawned on me yesterday (far too late as usual) that the reason I'd been struggling to concentrate on my college work was that I was completely wrapped up in the book I was reading. In fact pretty much everything else I was doing (apart from work. boo! hiss!) was being mad subservient to finding quality reading time. Now I get caught up in a book very easily but it has been a while since a book has taken over my life quite like that.
I love how a good book can take you completely away from your day to day existence and offer dreams and ideas greater then those that occur during the daily grind. I'm a huge consumer of art from various mediums but not even a record or film seems to exist quite so forcefully within my head. It is a kind of magic, perhaps the only one left in this day and age.
Oh yeah the book was Reapers Gale by Steven Erikson although it is book seven in a series so probably not the best place to start. Anyone who likes books about dragons, magic, epic battles and Gods should read all of them.
Other news.
Did what was needed for college during yesterday afternoon at work. Bit naughty but hey.
Off to the North next Wednesday. A week off. I can not wait.
Decided on my independent study topic. Does anyone have any decent articles on defining what 'working class' actually means?
