Went to see Pearl Jam two nights ago. Wasn't even planning to go to this concert (just hang out in the park and listen from a distance), but a friend of mine couldn't make it so I took over her tickets.
What a fucking awesome show!!!

Openers Kings of Leon and Incubus were both amazing but Pearl Jam... damn! Two hours plus of solid rock! It was mind blowing! Next time they're around I will definitely be back!

Well I had a pretty good weekend I must say...
Spent Saturday kicking back on the couch, smoking a cigar and working on a writing "assignment"/project thing that had been sent my way. It went really well too... hammered out 15 pages in just a few hours. Wish my writing always went that smoothly!
And Sunday was the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert. I went with an old friend of mine Janneke, and her sister. It's always fun with those two around
and I hadn't seen Janneke for a couple of months now, so it was cool to get together again. Despite the lousy weather (not as bad as during The Stones concert but fairly wet) we had a great time. The band was just fantastic. I had heard a lot of horror stories about RHCP concerts (especially Anthony Kiedis singing) but nothing was wrong with this performance. Top marks for RHCP!
Going to be hanging in the park again this Thursday (weather permitting) for the Incubus/Pearl Jam concert. Kind of curious what that'll be like.

Well... I'm a week late with it, but here then is the final chapter in my little concert trilogy:
The Rolling Stones.
What a disappointment. This was by far the most expensive concert I've ever visited and frankly put it just was not worth the money. Tristan and I arrived well on time and it looked like it was going to be a marvelous day. Bright sunshine, hot as hell, perfect. we parked our asses in the grass, enjoyed some pizza, and tried to keep a safe distance form the first opener. It was this so called blues band from here in Holland. My god did they SUCK!! I mean the blues can be good... but not in Dutch. Sorry, it just doesn't work. I should have taken that as a bad omen.
You see... It seems that Thor is a big stones fan. He showed up just after the first opening act was done. The sky turned gray, lightning flashed (knocking out the stage lights at one point), and the came the rain.... and by the gods did it rain! We were soaked to the bone! The second opener (Van Morrison) got washed of stage after two songs and the whole show picked up an hours delay. Meaning Tristan and I would later end up being very late for a friends wedding reception that night.
Finally the storm let up and The Stones took to the stage. Tristan later commented that we are just 5 years to late to see The Stones at their best and frankly I think he's right. For the first three quarters of the show the band were just going through the motions. There was no spark... not flare... just routine. It didn't help that they played mostly newer material and perhaps the storm had sucked some as much energy out of them as it clearly had out of the crowd. Things just weren't working... somehow the magic a good rock concert normally has was gone. It got so bad that Tristan even said: " I wouldn't even mind leaving" My response was a curt "Neither would I".....
"But not right now!"
You see it was at this very moment that the first bars of "Satisfaction" began to play. Everything changed at that moment. It was an almost amazing transformation. The band just came back to life! I can not describe the difference between what I had been watching all evening and what I now saw on the stage. As soon as they started playing their old material they were resurrected. A few more golden oldies followed Satisfaction. Most notably Jumping Jack Flash, Paint it Black, and the highlight of the show: Sympathy for the Devil.
It was amazing! Brilliant! Everything I had hoped for!
At the end of the day though it just wasn't enough. It was not worth the money, not worth standing in the rain, and not worth repeating. I can strike The Rolling Stones of the list of "Bands I must see before I die" but can't really say I had a great time there.
My next concert is Red Hot Chili Peppers. Same venue... I think this time I'll bring an umbrella.

Fear no more the heat 'o the sun,
Nor the furious winter's rages;
Thou thy worldly task has done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages:
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.
Fear no more the frown o' the great;
Thou art past the tyrant's stroke;
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak:
The scepter, learning, physic, must
All follow this, and come to dust.
Fear no more the lightning flash,
Nor the all-dreaded thunder stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash;
Thou hast finished joy and moan:
All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee, and come to dust.
Shakespeare; Cymbeline
Rest in peace, Daniel Robert Epstein.
This has been one hell of a week.. Three rock concerts, a job application, and a thunder storm that even Thor would be proud of. Talk about an experience.
Episode II: who are you?
Well after having a great time at the Tori Amos concert my week was off to a brilliant start. Monday dis have a serious not to it though: Job application. Right now I work at Heinz on an agency basis. It's not a bad situation, but it could be better. Specificly by getting a job with Heinz itself for which there is now an official vacancy. The interview went pretty well I thought. With only four applicants (and a work situation where we really need three extra people) I'd say my chances are fairly good. This being Heinz however I won't be counting my chickens just yet...
With the interview out of the way I had a couple of free days to enjoy. Something I had no problem doing Tuesday night.
It was simply put the mother of all concerts. I have seen some great ones, some TRULY great ones, but nothing beats The Who.
They were just sheer fucking awesome!! I have never enjoyed a concert so much in my life! Since their last album Endless Wire (2006) was their first in 24 years the old material greatly outweighed the new. Since it was that we had all come to hear... there were no complaints
They played so many great songs.... The Seeker, Baba O'Riley, My Generation. The only one I ended up missing was Join Together... but you can't get everything right?
The show was well put together and the opening act (The Cult
) got the crowd well warmed up despite being a generation ahead of most of their audience!
And that Zak Starkey on drums...damn! It was also nice to see The Who, widely conciderd to be the most influential rock band of all time, pay a little tribute to the man who had influenced them. Dedicating the song Good Looking Boy to Mr. Elvis Presley.
The new material that came by held it's own against the old classics (especially Man in a Purple Dress) and there were many songs I had not yet heard. Being a recently new Who fan I haven't had the chance to deeply immerse myself in their work. But I most certainly will now! The whole show just blew me away... and the the encore!
They played a good chunk of Tommy, Pinball Wizard (of course!) and the last bits of We're Not Going to Take It, before closing the show with an acoustic song (of which I have forgotten the title unfortunately
). Total brilliance!
You want to see Rock 'n Roll at its best.... go see The Who! I know I will go again next chance I get!

This has been one hell of a week.. Three rock concerts, a job application, and a thunder storm that even Thor would be proud of. Talk about an experience.
The ride began last Sunday night with a very tedious trips to Amsterdam. I was traveling with a friend, Marloes, on our way to the first of my trilogy of concerts: Tori Amos. Unfortunately it wasn't the only show on that night. In the venue next door (the Amsterdam Arena) another, much bigger concert was being held. The god awful "Toppers". Seriously, this is just about the most pathetic excuse for music on the face of the Earth and yet it packs STADIUMS full of people... It's things like this that cause me to loose faith in humanity.
Anyway... as a result of this other concert 5 out of the 6 access roads to the area were cut off. This fun little bit of traffic control lead to a huge tailback and nearly caused Marloes and myself to miss our concert. My hatred of the Toppers now knows no bounds. If i had voodoo dolls of them I'd be stabbing them with swords not pins!
*Frustration vented. Cooling down now.*
Once we escaped the traffic (by ditching my car on a grass verge) we legged it to the Heiniken Music Hall where we met up with another friend of hers, Inge. Two thing I have to say about Inge: 1) WOW!
2) she is the biggest Tori Amos fan I've ever met. Now don't get me wrong #1 didn't lead to anything (unfortunately) but #2 was great. It's always fun to go to concerts with someone who's a bit fanatic about the artist you're seeing, so Inge really made for great company.
The show was opened by English folk-rock musician Seth Lakeman. This guy was awesome! Really fast paced beautiful music with him playing the violin and singing at the same time (That can't be easy...). Tthe crowd weren't terribly responsive I thought. They were probably expecting quieter, more sober music. Something that just wasn't going to happen.
After the upbeat folk-rock of Lakeman, everyone, including Inge who had already seen Tori Amos twice before, was expecting things to slow down a bit... or at least quiet down. Tori Amos thought otherwise. It got loud! I mean even Nine Inch Nails would have been proud of the level of noise this show got too at some points. Not too bad for a little girl and her piano.
Now I will confess I haven't heard Amos' new album yet, but from the impression the concert left me with I am very much looking forward too it. Her music has always had soem swing to it but this was full on hard rock at times. I loved it!
I had been looking forward to seeing Tori Amos live for years. this show was not at all how I expected it to be, but it still blew me away! Given the chance I will definitely go again.

Coming soon: Blog Episode II: Who Are you?
Well.. it's 15 min. till midnight on sunday... What a weekend!
It's been all rock 'n roll here for the last couple of days. Friday night I headed out to 013 in tilburg for a dutch band called Moke. These guys are pretty new and not very well known yt, but i think that will be changing fast. They are really good! Bit of an old school rock 'n roll sound and all very well put together. especially their closing number Here Comes the Summer. Vette shit! as we say in dutch
Saturday though.... of man.... Deep Purple!!
This one is going straight into my top ten... no... top five... maybe even top three... (i need to make a list
)
It was just awesome! These guys reall know how to rock! Of course with 40 years of experience they probably should....
And their fans really LOVE them! the atmosphere at the concert was fantastc. and to top it all off tehy played all the songs my friends and i most wnated to hear
Hush, Highway Star, Lazy, Fireball, and (of course!) Smoke on the Water.
Smoke has never been one of my favorite songs. But when they played it live...and the crowd reacted... I can't even describe it! It was just pure unadulterated awesome!
If the rest other "old timers" i'm going to see soon (Th Cult, The Who and The Rolling Stones) do half as good a job i will be in for one hell of a treat!
Now howver i am going to bed... I seriously need to catch up on some sleep!
Thank you, and goodnight!

Insanely busy!
Been run of my feet at work the past week. There has been so much work piled on the lab over the past few months that we are now seriously short staffed. Everyone is pullin overtime, working the weeknds, and running around like chickens with their heads cut off half the time.
The good news is that the company wants to go from a 3-shift system to a 5-shift system. Means less work pressure, MUCH better working hours, and loads more free time! All great! Of course they've been talking about this for a year now... It's taken them this long to realize it needs to be done. Now we'll just wait and see how long it takes them to actually DO it.
That said: it's not been all work and no play these past weeks.
A friend of mine. Marten, recently left for Ecuador for a year, so there was a substantial going away party held in Kronenburger park here in town. It was a lot of fun and I got to see a bunch of people i haven't spoken to for over a year. And of course got totally piss drunk!
It's going to be wierd not having Marten around for a year though. In my small, but close, circle of friends he is... well he's the crazy one. he was also the only one who still lived here in Nijmegen. It's tough trying to get the old group together these days. Now, or at least for the next year, it's just going to be even tougher. But hey... at least I have a kick ass welcome home party to look forward to
Also managed to get together with my D'nD group a couple of times. Always fun. And even had an old friend visit who i haven't seen IRL for three years. That was really great!
And of course there are concerts! (I can't go with otu them these days...
)
Just saw Cold War Kids last saturday. Suported by the band Pink Mountaintops and a poet named Derrick Brown. The show was just awesome! Cold War Kids really give 110% on stage. They are an amazingly energetic band and make some great music! It was also very cool that they brought a poet along to open/MC the show. What really made the evening though was the team spirt you could see on stage. The two man formation Pink Mountaintops are a very good (all be it a bit hippie-esque
) band. Regularly memebrs of Cold War Kids came on stage to play with them. Supporting the support act as it were. To great effect! Derrick Brown als made cameo appearances through the main act, performing instruments and a selcted poem through one of their songs. It was almost like watching one band perform the whole night and generated a fantastic atmosphere. I definately want to see these guys again!
Concert news has kept me busy today though. It looks like I;m goign to be kicking it Old School the next few weeks. :p Firstly it looks like I'll be able to make The Stones concert after all... (cool
), then of course theres the Deep Purple concert. And just to round it off The Who (with The Cult as their support act)!
It will be sheer Old Scool awesomeness!
I can't wait!
anyway...I've ranted long enough. Time to log off and get some food

There are lots of quotes, mostly from movies, that have stuck with me over the years. Little bits of wisdom or humor that just seem so pertinent that I elect to drag them over into my daily life.
One such quote, I believe it was from Rat Race of all films, is: "Great things happen all at once". I have found this to be very true. Admittedly I have also found the saying "Bad things come in threes" to be a compleet load of old bollocks as they usually appear in sevens or eights... But that is irrelevant. What has happend now (or will be happening on june 8th) is two great things at once. Which is, as you may have guessed, great... save for the fact that I can't be in two places at the same time.
Damn it!
So my planned Rolling Stones concert will have to be canceld because two of my friends have decided to get married on that day. Friends come first. Always. Guess I'll just have to hope the Stones live long enough to put on another tour!

Lisa Gerrard
Category: Music
I don't really know how to begin this review... The concert was simply mindblowing!
Lisa Gerrard has a voice that surpasses beautiful. It is simply amazing to hear her sing. Now her music isn't for everyone, it is very artsy most of the time, but we are talking about High Art here. From her solo work to her work for film scores she has always created music that can only be described as hauntingly beautiful.
After all the rock concerts I've been to of late it was quite a change to be sitting in a theater listening to what could best be called classical music (for lack of any genre it may otherwise fit into). The sheer power of Gerrard's voice and the subtle blend of styles in her music hits you like a wave. Opening with the very bombastic piece "Tempus" and following through with songs from across her entire body of work Lisa Gerarrd and the very talented musicians she brought with her put on a breathtaking show.
I feel as though I should really be waiting a week or two before writing this review, as the more I think about this concert the better it gets. Everything about it was a unique experience. Even watching the way Gerrard prepares herself before every song, always aproaching the microphone stand as if it were a dance partner rather than an instument. Seeming sometimes almost nervous, not something you'd expect from someone who has been in the music business for 20 years.
The extra songs they played in their encore(s) were well worth the three standing ovations they milked us for
Especially the one that, for me, was the highlight of the concert: "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". Done a cappela this song like no other showcased Lisa Gerard's amazing talent. I fel like i have walked through a dream. A dream I hope to walk through again.
