I've been working at a company I love for 4 months and just got offered my own store. I worked as a floater for 40 hours/week and this position is only 30 hours/week, plus I'd be floating and extra 10 hours/week.

My question is whether to float to my boss the possibility of dropping the extra floating hours so I just work 30 hours/week full time (normally, if you are just hired to that position, that is what it would be)

I am sort of being worn thin by retail pharmacy and would love to only work 3 days/week rather than 4, and find myself a hobby that can maybe make me money on the side. However, what with the economy, n extra 500 bucks/week can really help me with my future wedding expenses and my loans.

Any thoughts?

If you can work the 40 for now and then reduce it to 30 after the wedding, i'd say do that. The extra money really feels good. I was working a lot of OT before i got laid off and was able to pay a lot of my debt off.

It is a lot of money to be leaving on the table if you don't work. Would 30 hours per week still be considered full time so you still get your benefits? If not then you really should work the extra hours. Otherwise maybe you could do 30 hours one week and 40 the next?

Congratulation getting your own store!!

As for the rest

I'm rather anti debt myself so I would say stick with full time.

I think you should figure out what you could do for the money making hobby idea. Get started while you have the full time safety net, sometimes a change of pace or scenery can be a fairly good break from 'work'. If your hobby can make you an extra amount of money that will pay for your wedding, honey moon, loans what ever then look into dropping down to 30 per week.

What did you have in mind if you don't mind me asking?

You always want to work 40, benefits will be needed sometime for you and your future husband..

If you don't have the "hobby" already going how will it make any
$$ it will probably cost money to start-up...the 40 pays now.ARRR!!!

I think sticking to the 40 hours and saving for a bit before transitioning would be the smart thing to do. Maybe do some research on your down time on a hobby so that you're ready when the time comes to own your own store smile

Yes, drop those extra floating hours --- free time is the best thing! (Think of it as buying your own time back.)

Congratulations on being offered your own store!

Also, I agree with Milloux above. Keeping the 40 weekly hours and saving for a while is probably the best move for now, at least until you get used to your new position.
