Today my church was attacked. News of The Aurora Theatre tragedy spread as I waited in a queue at the Waterloo IMAX for my own Dark Knight Rises experience. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families. The film-goers were geeks like many of us here. To be in attendance at a midnight screening they would have loved film and loved Batman. That such a reverential audience were killed and injured in a place everyone deserves to feel safe beggars belief.

Things will change after today. No more fancy dress, increased security and increased scrutiny on the influence of cultural media. There will be those who politicise, and there will be those who make reactionary statements. But for now, we should ignore the hysteria and remember the human cost of very human evil. One man committed this crime, not a film, or a culture. I hope this man is forgotten long before his victims.

My belief in the transformative power of cinema remains as strong. Those that died in Colorado believed in the transformative power of cinema. For my part, I will not let my belief waiver or be poisoned because I am told that some twenty-four year old has been warped by a fictional piece of entertainment about a man in a rubber bat costume. But next time I go to a cinema - a near religious experience for as long as I can remember - I will take note of this tragedy, and take stock of how lucky I am to have all that I have.

My condolescences to all involved.

You are so right about people politicizing the events and make wild assertions and speculations. It's already happening over here. The liberal media is blaming the Tea Party. The Conservative media is blaming the liberal agenda and educational systems. The educational systems are blaming the parents. Unfortunately, the buck may stop there. I heard an article earlier that said the suspected shooters mother 'knew' when she heard the news that her son was involved. What did that mother know about her child that she didn't warn others about?

Its always said when people lose their lives in senseless violence. Its even worse when people use it to attempt to contort cultural perspectives and draw political lines.

Stay strong in your belief in the power of cinema. It IS a strong power that effects the lives of so many people in a positive way and will continue to do so.

As ever you are far more eloquent with your words than I am but I completely agree with your sentiment, I was just sat at work on my break when I stumbled across the news and very nearly dropped my coffee as a result.

You are very much correct in the way things descend into political finger pointing, avoidance of blame and responsiblity and the hunt for a suitable scapegoat in the aftermath of such tragic events and it saddens me to see the same arguements played out again and again whilst the real cost fades into the background of the media onslaught.

I've never seen anyone cosplaying to go to the cinema myself but then I think British audiences are far more reserved than their American counterparts or maybe it's purely due to where I live.

Now you've got me on a Pinter run.

You wouldn't understand my works. You wouldn't have the faintest idea of what they were about. You wouldn't appreciate the points of reference. You're way behind. All of you. There's no point in sending you my works. You'd be lost. It's nothing to do with a question of intelligence. It's a way of being able to look at the world. It's a question of how far you can operate on things and not in things. I mean it's a question of your capacity to ally the two, to relate the two, to balance the two. To see, to be able to see! I'm the one who can see. That's why I can write my critical works. Might do you good...have a look at them...see how certain people can view...things...how certain people can maintain...intellectual equilibrium. Intellectual equilibrium. You're just objects. You just...move about. I can observe it. I can see what you do. It's the same as I do. But you're lost in it. You won't get me being...I won't be lost in it.

Ha. So good.

I was just thinking, that ^ reminds me a bit of Mr Ramsay in To The Lighthouse. I've just finished reading it for the second time. So bloody wonderful.
