RIP Richard Hamilton. Born February 24th 1922. Died September 13th 2011, aged 89
Which means that in a matter of months, Britain has, counting Freud, lost two of its great figurative painters.
You may not have heard of Hamilton, but you might just own a copy of his work.

The White Album cover is so sparce because it was deliberately conceived as a response to Sergeant Pepper's overwhelming Peter Blake-designed collage. The Beatles almost didn't go for it, but now its an iconic sleeve.
Speaking of collage, Richard Hamilton's most famous piece is Just what is that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? which would deal with the one facet of modern life that would eventually define him, consumerism.

Today's Times shared a anecdote, that I thought rather lovely, and which exemplifies a man who, unlike Freud, spent his last few decades away from the limelight:
Hamilton was reported to have turned down a CBE, saying 'Instead, about twenty years ago, I was given a card that admits me to the National Gallery at any time of the day or night. I remember going to see a Mantegna exhibition. I sat for half an hour in front of these wonderful paintings. There were no interruptions, not even a guard walking past. Now that's a reward[/I
