Evening all! Thank you for your birthday wishes. Its been a quiet one, but I'm not complaining. I am wearing a dressing gown, I have whiskey, Hidden (Cache) on DVD and all is well with the world. I'm looking forward to being 26. I have a better job, better health and a better frame of mind. Now I just need the love of a good woman!

Inspired by AnnaLee's terrific 'La Double Vie' set, I finally watched the film. I had forgotten how much I love French cinema. Now, no-one can compete with La Belle Noiseuse Emmanuele Beart for my affection, but Irene Jacob came pretty damn close

I also bought The Beat that My Heart Skipped which reminded me, in the best possible way, of the glorious French Polars of the 1980s - my favourite era and movement(cinema du look)

Romain Duris is absolutely magnetic as the twitchy conflicted Thomas. It was a terrific performance, and I will see a film purely on the strength of his being in it. I admit, I went a little gay for himconfusedblush

My love affair with the Tindersticks has also been rekindled - the amateur video is also rather appropriate given this francophilic nature of this blog!

I am now expected to wear a tie every day of my working life. It's like being condemn to hang by the noose every day until dead, except I get to take the damn thing off at 5.40! Anyway, small price to pay, right?

Sorry for the short, scatological nature of this blog. I'm tired and full of carrot cake. But I love you all!

Wearing a tie isn't all that bad... I've worn a tie to work for the past 7 ish years now, it takes some getting used to if your office is a bit stuffy though frown

you have a shower in your bedroom?! you rock.
Well, i'm guessing it is your bedroom, it may not be...

Carrot Cake is the best cake in the world. Nice choice.

Glad you had a good birthday! Oh - and you look really good in a tie. I have sooooo many ties Maybe like 20 or 30? I did steal some from my brother. I liked wearing them to work... But then, I wore them through choice, and didn't put them on in the summer!

Looking good! I can still remember the last time that I wore a traditional tie - it was nearly twenty years ago. There is an alterative neckwear option which I sometimes wear, however...

I'm so glad that you enjoyed The Double Life of Veronique. It is, as you know, one of my favorite films. I first fell in love with Irene Jacob when I saw here in Red, the third film in Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy. I've seen every film of hers that I could get my hands on. Such breathtaking beauty - and so wonderfully talented.

But yes, when it comes to French actresses, the queen of them all is Emanuel Beart. The first film from which I remember her is Claude Berri's immortal 1987 classic Manon of the Spring (Jean de Florette, Part II) another one (or actually two) of my favorites. She was incredible in La Belle Noiseuse - a tour de force performance and yes, I immensely enjoyed her, um, wardrobe in so much of the film.

The last time that I read Lord of the Flies was probably 40 years ago. I enjoyed it again last week immediately after (re)reading Huxley's Island. It was a wonderful week for books...

I love Angel-A. This was actually the third time I've seen it. After I (re)watched Wings of Desire a couple of weeks ago I suddenly simply had to see the Besson film again. It's funny (and a bit scary) how my mind works. I agree with you on The Insider - this was the first that I'd seen it and I was very impressed. I look forward to Mann's Capra film.

It's too bad you live across the pond. It would be great to have someone around to sip some Scotch and discuss interesting books and films (among other things) once in a while. If you do end up coming over here, I hope we'll have some time to visit.

I also hope that the new job (and all else) is going well.

All the best...

Thank you!

French cinema has changed a lot these last years. It once was known for character-based stories and now has a great action productions. Everything is growing.

Due in no small part to your recommendation, I've just finally added Quicksilver to my reading list. I'd heard extremely positive things about Neal Stephenson but (quite frankly) was a bit intimidated by the size and scope of the book - not to mention the remainder of the trilogy.

The target date is early December...
