It's mainly because I consider myself an expat in a lot of ways and wouldn't have moved back to the states if it weren't for the fact that my culture is here. I don't live on my rez but I'm very active in the native community and it is a huge part of my life. I want my kids to know that being native isn't just something you say or the color of your skin and for them to appreciate it.
So anyway, having experienced racism and ignorance as a child and generally feeling disenfranchised and overlooked in this country for so long I never really felt all that patriotic. Barack has spoken to tribes during his campaign and I believe that he will do a lot for us, even if that is merely honoring the treaties already in place.
I think him being in office will help heal wounds among the african american community as well so it is a positive thing all around. No more finger pointing, demanding reparations, etc. but inspiration to move forward from where we are today and to do it with class.
