Holy crap I was so bummed when I heard this. The guy that owns the comic shop I frequent is a close friend of Mike's. He's at Wizard World this weekend and hit pretty hard by this.
But he did remarkably well considering the cards he was dealt. He could very well have folded 8 years ago; many players of less fortitude in this "Game" surely would have.
Although he began his career long after I broke my comics obsession (it was, quite liteerally, a major problem for me), I have long been quite impressed with his work, and the Comics World has lost a beautiful artist, no doubt impacting the Lives of younger Comic fans in much the same way thatMarvel's late John Buscema affected my Life and the Lives of many other fans of my Generation. For the record, he was the primary artist on the Conan comics and Avengers comics. There was a friendly rivalry back in The Good Ol' Daze between fans of Buscema and those of Jack Kirby (whom I never liked - his block-style shading and square fingers didn't do it for me)
I feel for his fans - I am certain you're experienceing the same sort of loss I felt 6 years ago.
