Hey Gang-

I am headed to the Tahoe Reno International Film Festival in Lake Tahoe from August 24th through the 27th, so if you are in the area, come say hello. And hang out. And see movies. I'll be there to hang out and see films and, well, somehow I always end up at a party or two. This is my second year attending the fest and it's a blast -- they know how to have fun in TR!

My bone-white skin acts as a reflector for women like publicist Emily from Dominon3 who prefer extra sunlight to achieve that perfect tan.

I'll also be moderating a panel on Saturday, August 26th at 11:30 AM that sounds very boring, but I promise that I'll make it fun. It's called "The Distribution Maze: Finding Your Way." Here's the description from the program guide:
With the profusion of new technologies comes a wealth of opportunities for the independent filmmaker. The term Digital Revolution once applied only to the production and post production arenas, but it is now taking on new meaning in the world of digital distribution. And yes, it is ever-changing and a bit overwhelming. From on-line broadcasting to in-store sale of DVD's, to the traditional channels of distribution, the options seem limitless. But which way to go?

Anyway, see you in Lake Tahoe... I'll be gambling and hitting the pool.

Geekapalooza at Comic-Con in San Diego

Hey gang-
Okay, the most amazing geek event of the year is finally upon us -- the San Diego Comic Con July 20-23rd! It's not just comics, it's everything pop culture including comic books, videogames, cartoons, art, TV, and especially movies. I've been attending for over ten years now, and it's difficult to describe to anyone who's ever been -- it's 100,000 like-minded nerds, geeks, fans and creators coming together in the colossal convention center and celebrate all that media junkies like myself worship. Best of all, fans can connect directly with artists and creators to interact and share ideas.

And I'll be there to enjoy it all! Where can you find me? Easy, here's my schedule to make your stalking plans easier...

- Film Threat booth #C6 - Look for me at the Film Threat booth which is in the hall closest to the Marriott located somewhere in the back. Come by just to say, "Hi," and check out our indie DVDs along with our new line of kick ass movie-related T-Shirts that are incredible.

Our DVDs are so good, you'll call the cops on yourself...

- Film Threat and Suicide Girls in a tree... K-I-S-S-I-N-G - Okay, here's an inside scoop those attending Comic-Con will love -- this year we're sharing a booth with Suicide Girls. Sure, FT is fringe culture film and SG is fringe culture nakedness and, well, we like each other. So, c'mon by and chat with a live Suicide Girl -- just be polite and, uh, buy something.

- Friday, July 21st, 5 PM - 6 PM - Indie Film's Final Frontier Panel - Join me and other independent film folks for what is sure to be a lively panel on the future of filmmaking.

- Events at the FT Booth - In addition to meeting the filmmakers' behind our DVDs, you'll be able to meet Christy Marie, the covergirl for our Starwoids DVD. I mean, I defy you to even utter the words "Slave Leia Bikini" and not get excited!

Christy Marie wears this metal bikini well.

- Film Threat Party - Well, it's going to be at a small underground club in the gaslamp called "The Naked Faerie." And unless you're on the list... well, you're not getting in. Sorry folks, it's a small place and I can't afford to get arrested at another party, much less, my own.

The Naked Faerie is going to rock on Friday!

- Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival - This year I served on the jury for the festival (along with Amber Benson and Thomas J. McLean) and saw some amazing films. So, come by the awards ceremony on Sunday, July 23rd at 11:30 AM - 12:15 PM to get a look at some incredible genre work from around the world. Here's a link to the complete festival schedule

I have so many memories from previous cons -- hanging with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes at the Mallrats party, meeting Stan Lee, that time I was drinking at that one party and getting wildy romantic with a girl in a full Planet of the Apes costume -- it's an event not to be missed. I've included some photos below from Comic-Con's past for you to enjoy, so check that out also. See you at the Con!

This burlesque show at a local SD bar was a geek's fantasy come true.

Nice n' bloody.

My personal favorite body mods are the ones that come as a surprise. I'm talking about scars.

On Monday, I accidently stabbed myself with a razor blade. The story involves moding a tech device. I'm a big geek and a geek of many shades. I get frustrated when a particular device or home item does not function the way I would like and when that happens, I head to my tool set and just make/mod whatever I need.

I think this all started when I would build custom parts for my 1972 Triumph Daytona 500 motorcycle when the parts I needed were expensive or hard to find. A lot of times it was just about cutting/molding hunks of metal into the shape/size I needed to serve a purpose. I've made custom parts for my Treo phone, built shelves to hold specific games or electronics, made parts for cameras to mount them in unique places, constructed lighting arrangements that turn a cheap apartment into a high class club and even installed my Tom-Tom GPS into the dash of my car as well as making countless parts from spare parts. Not much of what I do is particularly technical, it's more about constructing something custom to fill a purpose when the thing I need can't be purchased. So, perhaps wood shop and metal shop in high school was not a complete waste of time. (I always got As.)

Anyway, back to my injury, I was trying to mod my new cordless phone -- basically adding a beltclip. So, with a razor blade, I was hacking into a hunk of plastic and slipped and stabbed my left hand. Blood spurted everywhere, which I always think is kind of cool. All I could think was -- I now have to wait in an emergency room while I wait to get this thing sewed up. Great. I had plans to write and get caught up. So, before heading to the clinic, I grabbed my iPod since I knew I'd be in for a lot of waiting.

The cut was not long, maybe an inch, but it was deep, so the doctor had to look inside there to see if I'd cut a tenden.

He determined that I'd cut down to the tenden, but not into it, so I was in the clear. Three stitches, and two shots of anti-biotics later (one in the arm and one in the gluteus maximus better known as my butt) and I was out the door.

That shot in the behind is always such an odd sensation since they are forcing liquid through your butt fat and into the blood stream and all I could think was to laugh out loud. And it was a big belly laugh since it just felt so darn weird. That got everyone in this area of the clinic laughing their asses off, so to speak.

The gash should leave a nice scar, but after reading the paragraphs above I wish I had a more interesting story to accompany the injury. I've got some nice scars from previous injuries, and I like to think of them as my own special body mods that are, while not as artful as tattoos, they are sometimes way cooler since comes as a surprise! You never know quite what kind of scar you're going to get.

Or when. And that makes those stories behind mysterious scars so much more interesting.
