I started my second week of work last night. It was a little less hectic than last week, but only slightly. I guess I'll see how the next three nights go.
They hired a new guy two days ago at the place I work so at least I'm not the lowest man on the totem pole. I also heard that there is a new person starting either tonight or tomorrow. If they keep adding people maybe I/we won't have to do so much each hour.
So after talking to a few people (and the wifey) I'm thinking that after my 6 month new hire probation is up I'll keep my eye open for any openings in the IT department. That way I can keep my employment benefits, but do something a little less stressful. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the things I have to do, but I just wish I didn't have to do them all each night. Just too many steps/procedures for every damn thing...
This week I'll only have two days off as I have mandatory training. The good part is that I supposedly get paid to attend.

Life has been very busy lately!
I got hired, full-time, doing security for a local business. They are very strict about certain things so I won't name the place. Let's just say it is an entertainment business with a hotel.
Anyway, the pay sucks, but after 6 months medical is completely paid by them (which is worth it for the pay difference) and dental is supposed to be fairly cheap.
It looks like I'll be working the graveyard shift (10PM to 8AM) for a long time (probably the first year). The plus side though, is that I work 4 10s which gives me 3 days off!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm back!
That was a shitty 2 months with no money! There was a HUGE fuck up with my financial aid because 1) I attended two schools in the same calendar year, 2) One school's year started summer and the other ended Summer and I attended one of them during the Summer, 3) I already have a bachelor's degree which is confusing for them to understand for some reason, 4) normal financial aid/government B.S.
Cell phone, TV, Internet, and home phone were also affected.
So anyway I'm still alive just had the unfortunate situation where my SG subscription ran out during this whole mess.
Now to catch up on TWO MONTHS of SG sets!!!

I have been giving some serious thought to giving up on a second bachelors degree (in computer science) at the university at going back to the community college and doing their fairly new (to me) computer forensics specialty in their criminal justice (2-year associates) degree.
I've completed about 3/4 of the CS degree and honestly I don't know that I really need two bachelors degrees. The computer programming industry doesn't look to hot right now and my other passion is law enforcement. The reason for the sudden change is that the CS program at my university has been completely overhauled and as of this next school year they are no longer offering the "old" classes. I REALLY do not feel like taking a bunch of lower-division classes with a bunch of freshmeat just to get back to where I am now.
I have been toying with this idea for a few weeks now and I've come up with a few thoughts: is a second bachelors degree really worth it? Probably not (a masters would be.) My GPA is pretty low and I doubt any graduate school would consider me which was the direction I was trying to go with the CS degree.
So I have a bachelor of arts in history with a computer science minor and I completed about 3/4 of a bachelor of science in computer science. That should still be respectable to any decent employer.
I have had a hard time coming to this decision but I am learning that I do not have to have a bachelors degree as a computer science major to be a happy nerd.
Plus who cares about the degree after you get hired and have been working for a few years? Probably no one.

Why are AVCHD (MTS) files such a pain in the ass to deal with?
I have an HD Sony camcorder that uses this format (which is a 15:1 compression ratio!) but there are not a lot of video editors out there that can PROPERLY handle it.
In the past I've used ffmpeg to convert it to DV and then edit in kino on Linux, but for some reason keeps producing artifacts and/or audio/video sync problems. I've also used Nero 9 on Windows, which I suppose I could look into using again, but I would much prefer to do it all in Linux.
I guess I'll keep up with the trail-and-error method and hope to find some combo that works.

I've been thinking about saving up and buying an XRackPro 4U for my two 1U rackmount servers as one of them is intolerably loud - plus they suck in every bit of dust that passes near the planet...
Anyone have any experience with these cabinets? The specs claim 80% noise reduction and I'm wondering how close to that I can expect?

Hey peeps! I haven't been on SG much lately or anywhere else online for that matter. Been super busy!
Quick recap of the last month or so:
My Blue Fronted Amazon passed away from liver disease. He was only 12 and they are supposed to live for 60 - 80 years! :'-(
We are looking into adopting a baby Blue Fronted Amazon next month so that we can raise it properly instead of dealing with a bird that's malnutritioned from morons that feed parrots nothing but seed!!!
I somehow passed both of my summer classes even though I probably should have failed the math class (I failed 2 of 4 quizes and got a "C" on 2 of 5 exams.) I think they just passed me to get rid of me!
Went camping last weekend. It was hot and sticky. Came home a day early.
I finally hooked up the Bluray/surround sound player/receiver up to the Internet (for netflix) after owning it for like a year... and on a related note have been watching ST
S9 and ST:Voyager like crazy.
I did a data recovery job on a hard drive that had been hit by a massive power surge from a large industrial saw. The surge was so massive that it took out the power companies transformer for the whole block/area. I had a custom circuit board made for the drive and it literally took 60-62 days with speeds varying between 1 byte/sec to 5mb/s (which is why it took so long) but I was able to recover approximately 70% of the data on the drive. Not too bad even for me!
I switched the desktop computer from Gnome2 to XFCE4 (still running Gentoo Linux) and while it's a step backwards from Gnome2 it is definitely better than Gnome3.
Still shaking my head in disgust over the Windows 8 UI. WTF, over!
and life goes on.......

So I'm still playing Star Trek Online if anyone here also plays. My main character is named "Rush" and is a Federation Engineer. I am one of two fleet admirals of the Alpha Task Force fleet. If anyone wants an invite to the fleet just PM or email me in-game as we are recruiting and open to players of any level.
If there were enough players from SG I wouldn't be opposed to turning the fleet into an SG-oriented fleet!
Today I am trying to finish up a programming assignment (that's due at midnight tonight) that implements the missionaries and cannibals puzzle in Racket/Scheme (a derivative of lisp) which I'm a little rusty with. I'm guessing it's been probably 2 years since I've written anything in the language.
...but first I have a quiz in my math class in about an hour and a half and I'm already tired of doing math problems this morning!

Just played with the latest Windows 8 Beta (64-bit) Preview.
What in the fuck is microsoft smoking?
It's as if someone took Windows 7 and Chrome OS and created Frankenstein's monster with it!
This is, by far, the worst UI I have ever used.
If I wanted a tablet-oriented UI I will use a fucking tablet!
Hell I wouldn't even use this pile of shit on my tablet!
I hope microsoft provides updates for Windows 7 for a long time...

I've been giving some thought towards building a still. It will mostly be used to produce rum, but maybe other things on occasion.
I used to be strictly a (dark) beer guy, but lately it's the rum that makes me happy.
It can be straight rum, mixed in a drink, expensive stuff or cheap crap. I'm not that picky. I picked up a bottle of C.M. from costco last Friday for like $25 but it's only 70 proof (cheap bastards) and the bottle is already empty.
Anyway I'm broke again (actually in the red this week) so it'll probably be a week or two before I can buy another bottle or parts to build a still...
