Hey Philly!
I am DJing down at Raven Lounge at 1718 Sansom St. This Friday night, 9/15. It's the first installment of a new monthly we are doing there on the third Friday of the month.
We play house music of all varieties, so be prepared to dance. Introduce yourselves if you come. I will be the guy that looks like that picture.
Also, I will (hopefully) have a free mixed CD for everyone that attends.

Here is some stuff I've been digging lately. It's worth your while to track this stuff down if you can..
Unearthly Trance - The Trident (Relapse) - Epic yet diverse metal from these ex-Long Island hardcore kids. The recording brings out their overall intensity and you are left wondering if this band listens to more Isis or Mastodon. Either way, this is my favorite thing that Relapse has done since "Leviathan".
The Busy Signals - Can't Feel a Thing 45 (Shit Sandwich) - This is literally perfect garage punk. Thick guitars and the catchiest melodies this side of indie pop. Possibly the best single released so far in 2006. Wish it was more than 2 songs, but it's nice to be left wanting a lot more.
Sic Alps - Soft Tour in Rough Form 12" (Mountain Saint Mountain) - Blown out folky guitar work and droney, yet clear vocals. Lo-Fi but not annoyingly so. I really like this, and this style of music/recording is really hit or miss for me. Makes you feel like you are on too many pain killers underwater. My only complaint is that it's too short. 4 songs in a limited edition of 500. Definitely recommended.
Skitsystem - Stigmata LP (Havoc Records) - The masters of Scandinavian crust return with a suitably crushing and consistently awesome record. This is what political hardcore needs to sound like; the point comes across like a spiked bat to your testicles.
Saviours - Crucifire LP (Level-Plane Records) - If you live in the Bay Area, go check this band out whenever you can. Well played 80's style metal mixed with a High on Fire vibe. Ex-members of Yaphet Kotto and The Pattern getting evil and managing to be compelling while they do it.
You have your homework! Go google and order!

Yesterday, D and I went to NY for the day. It was cool to just hang out on a Monday. I got drilled by Chris over at NY Adorned and it looks like my right arm will be complete after one more session. That is great news. I want to then start on my sternum, and then my back later on. I also bought a Black Flag T-shirt on St Mark's Place, making the day extra tough. I like that I still shop like a 15 year old.
Happy Easter or Passover.
We celebrated both. On Passover we went to one of D's ex-coworker's house in the 'burbs to attend a Sedar... my first in many years. It was bittersweet. Great food and nice people, but it was the first Sedar I ever attended that didn't include family members. I could give a shit about religion, but I grew up viewing holidays like this as a time for all of us to hang out and eat. It was surreal to watch another family interact like mine, but not know anyone.
For Easter we went all out. Our apartment is filled with chocolate. Thank you Cadbury, See's and Maron. We invited three friends over for a huge dinner; D handled the Hot Cross Buns and Yorkshire Pudding. I made the potatos, a 6 LB roast and asparagus. On a whim, we ate shrooms in the middle of the day. We split an 8th into 5 parts and went for it.
After about 20 minutes, they kicked in. Hard. Everyone was a bit taken aback by the potency. Our friend Scott got sick and slept on our couch for a while. I paced around the kitchen and living room , watching the roast and also watching the floor and walls move. Our backyard changed into a different place when I looked down from our balcony. D was giggly, then overwhelmed, then giggly again. Our other friends were rookies and just stayed giggly the whole time. Intense.
Surprisingly, the roast came out perfect. Dinner was a hit. it was a weird day though. A 3 hour trip felt like it had lasted 15 hours.
I know how boring it is to read/hear drug stories, so I apologize, but that is what went down. We now have enough roast beef to feed a small army.

Good morning. Consistently warm weather has finally hit the Philadelphia area, though I am not holding my breath and expecting it to last.
Last night I went to check out everyone's favorite hyped punk rock band of the moment, Gorilla Angreb from Denmark. I was excited because the band features members of Amde Petersens Arme, my favorite Danish punk rock band. GA was good, but just good. Not as amazing as the nerds are tellling me. They sound like a gruffer X. The singer is great and she has a lot of charisma and presence, but the live energy was not what I was hoping for.
Signal Lost played as well, and I thought they were great. Naked Aggression is the closest frame of reference I can get to. Good Naked Aggression, though. I feel like Naked Aggression was good 35% of the time, but when they were on, they were really on. Signal Lost is Naked Aggression when they were killing it.
Caustic Christ ruled. Great classic American hardcore. Political, pissed off and loud. Ragers from A to Z.
Left before the Subhumans played. All the 14 year old punks were stoked though.
My lady went to see a free Walkmen show. She thought they were boring and that their garb was pulled straight from the SS. Oh well. Live indie rock continues to disappoint in the 06.

Daylight savings time. I love that it stay light out later, but I also have to wake up at 5:45 every morning and it is DEPRESSING to wake up before the sun.
Don't get me wrong. This is nothing new for me. I've been an early riser since high school, but I will never get used to feeling like I am the only person on earth that is awake. The alarm beeps, my girlfriend groans and turns over and I am out of bed, seeing triple, making a beeline through our pitchblack apartment and heading straight for the coffee pot. It's funny how much I operate on autopilot at this time of day. I could probably find the coffeemaker if I was blindfolded and footbound.
In any event, good morning everyone. Don't be a stranger and say hello. Introduce yourself to me. I am on here sporadically throughout the day, and I'm going to attempt to keep this journal updated.
As an aside, Thursday evening is when I go to Happy Hour. I will be drinking many $1 lagers and listening to Mastodon tonight. But I'm allowed; as a university newspaper informed me, Thursday is the new Friday.

Hey all. I am new around these parts, so I may as well introduce myself.
I grew up in New York City and finished college (NYU) in '99 with degrees in English and Art History.
I've been a music dork for as long as I can remember, so I am your resident editor/writer for the Music section of the Newswire. I am sure I will annoy and/or charm a lot of you so don't hesitate to send me angry messages or love letters. It's all the same to me.
I am 29 years old and live in West Philly with my lovely girlfriend and a small dog named Gizmo.
