More things I think about:

Why is it that when you see dead animals on the road, they're always the side of the road? Do they crawl to the side of the road after they get hit? Do people hit them when driving off the road? Do people move them after hitting them?

Recent polls suggest that things I say sound more credible if I claim that a vague authority supports them.

there is a squirrel carcass in the road right by wear i live.
dead center of the road.
it's right where the wires cross over the road.
i think that he was crossing on the wire and then splat.

Most center-lane roadkill is smaller stuff that gets smashed flat by drifting/swerving cars' tires. Larger roadkill tends to not get hit dead-center, nor by the tires but by higher bodywork such as bumpers, grilles and fenders. This, combined with larger animals' increased weight and inertia, tends to propel them towards the shoulders of the road, away from the point of impact.

Can you tell I once worked in a body shop in deer country?

I once saw a dead horse in the middle of a freeway. So, there you go.

Well, one of my favorite things about NJ was the fact that they refused to pay for roadkill cleanup. Creatures just sat there until they became completely one with the road or some other critter carries them off for dinner. God, Jersey was nasty.

Actually, there is a lot of farmland around the area that it happened. There was no trailer in sight, and I can't think of a horse owner that would just drive away. Poor guy probably broke free of the fences and just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
