According to this article, the top 10 money drains are:

I don't do any of those things, so by all accounts I should be rich, but I'm not. It's because I am the epitome of pennywise and pound foolish. I don't spend money on things most people do, but I do spend money on things most people don't. I have good judgment when it comes to saving money, and bad judgment when it comes to spending it. I need to work on that.
I also work less than I should, because I don't need to make that much money to live comfortably, especially after moving to Portland. But the work is always there, I just need to do it. Basically, I need to improve my judgment and stop being such a lazy ass.

I attended the Oregon Brewers Festival yesterday, which they tell me is the best beer party on the continent. I figured if there was any place I'd find an alcoholic beverage I'd actually enjoy, this would be it. So I enthusiastically bought my mug and tokens and began the tasting along with 50,000 other folks.

Three sips into it I had pretty much given up. I'm sure you beer connoisseurs can tell the difference between a lager, ale, and stout; to me it all tastes like beer, and it's not a taste I particularly enjoy. I kept popping Altoids trying to remove that aftertaste from my mouth with little effect. I guess I'm simply not cut out to be a boozer. On the bright side, I did have some fabulously good gyros.
During the festivities atomicant informed me of his intentions to see a midget stripper, in town for one night only. Morbid curiosity got the better of me and I decided to tag along. Not able to get a van big enough to fit all of us, atomicant drew the short straw and rode on the back of my motorcycle. If you've ever seen my motorcycle you know why this is funny.
The club was an interesting joint; aquariums, a hot tub, wireless internet (not in itself unusual for Portland), and of course, one "Lil' Pixie". This girl put on quite a show, with everyone throwing hundreds of dollars on stage. I saw strippers emptying their collected tips on her, even the DJ stepped down to throw money on stage, something I've never seen before.
Afterwards we needed photographic evidence of the night, so that's when me, atomicant, and Shmelectra got a little souvenir.

Well, since pretty much all of you said I need to do the life experience thing and go globe trotting, I guess you deserve an update. Obviously that was the best choice, and it wasn't really so much should I do it, but do I want to do it.
I had fears about spending a year living out of a backpack in exotic locales due to things I'm particular about, so I've decided instead to concentrate my travels on Europe, and select parts of the Middle East and Russia, and shorten my trip to 3-6 months instead of a year. I stick to more culturally familiar territory and I'm away from everyone I know for a shorter period of time.
I usually tend to really go all out when I do things, and that sometimes doesn't work out so well for me, so I figure something less ambitious to start with would be better, and I'll go from there.
In other news, Silencia updated her journal with pictures from our Vancouver road trip, so I guess I have to follow suit and write a belated journal entry on the subject...

Why lobsters are cooler than you:
- They show no apparent signs of aging
- They can smell amino acids
- They eat their own molted shells (good source of calcium!)
- They can regenerate lost limbs
- They can be right or left handed
- Lobster blood is clear
- Their teeth are in their stomach!

Next week will be a year since moving to Portland. I know many of you are sick of me talking about it, but it is easily the best decision I have ever made.
I was recently offered a job, and I wasn't even looking for one. I don't know if I'm going to take it. I've been working from home since I got here, if you can really call what I've been doing work. I did more work in my last month in Florida than in the last year in Portland, and yet I've never made as much money as I do now. It's an odd town.
In fact, after I finish this current project I don't have to work for a while. I have been contemplating taking a year off and doing one of those round the world trips; I read this book and found it was easily within my means with just the money I have saved up right now.
I'm in a period of transition. I've made sure to keep my life very portable; I could at any given moment put everything I own in boxes, stash them somewhere, and leave for a year, not having missed much when I return. Without a steady job, a relationship, or anything tying me down, there's really nothing I can't do. I'm just not sure what I want to do, even if it is a steady job, a relationship, or something tying me down.
I'm at the point in my life right now where I should either be thinking about settling down, or getting some life experiences under my belt.

I'm not a gamer. I own no consoles, and no computer games. The last game I bought and played was back in 1998. It was StarCraft.
I remember working at my first web design job that summer, and taking hour lunches to play 4v4 StarCraft matches on the company's LAN. I remember the eight hour matches at my best friend's house playing island maps. Some of the fondest gaming memories I have are of this game.
So when I saw this, I nearly crapped my pants...
