That is weird. Any chance you were doing something repeatedly that didn't seem traumatic at the time? Like leaning against something or sitting against something? I bring this up because a group of us, 8 of us, all had identical mystery bruises on our arms once. We finally figured out that it was from pulling ourselves back into our boats when we were practicing capsize recoveries. None of us felt any pain or trauma at the time and it was only when we noticed the bruises that we started wondering what had happened. So maybe its something you didn't notice at the time, or you're sleep caning yourself....

Usually when I have a bruise like that, I always hope that I enjoyed earning it. Seriously, I hope it doesn't hurt to sit or lean against it.

I'd love to kiss it and make it better, but seriously, bet it's subcutaneous bleeding, a vessel broke while you tried to catch your balance while you fell. I'm sure you will be fine. I bet it doesn't hurt, if so it's probably that.
