Don't know; but I've all ways thought you miss too much without hearing the voice and emotion of the actor, and it was just important as hearing their words. Even better if you can understand the words, and context, even if it's not your mother tongue..

But then I'm amazed how few people only speak one language.

I personally LOVE French films!! I have yet to see a Swedish film but this one is now on my to do list! With foreign films I find that a little extra effort on my part leaves me more satisfied at the end.

let me in (the American remake) has already been released and from what I've heard... the original was much better.

I totally agree about originals being much better for example one of my favourite films and an amazing one at that is Pan's Labyrinth... after about 15 mins of watching it you forget it is even in Spanish and I also watched an incredible movie called city of god which also had subtitles and was amazing

Yeah I would say that they were talking about that one or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, both excellent films that did not suffer because I had to "read" them, they definitely are missing out.

I used to have trouble with subtitles. Now I generally get the gist if what's happening by demeanor and interaction with an occasional subtitle glance, And now I'm much more bothered by dubbing, Loved the original versions of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire, We'll see how the American versions compare,

I'm with you. I cannot stand watching overdubbed movies and hate most remakes of foreign films. I find that within the first few words I don't even notice the subtitles and it's as if I can understand the spoken language. I love that moment because it feels like the movie has not only taken me into it's world, it's made me a citizen of another nation for the duration.

I much prefer subtitles... when done well. Sometimes even they can be awful.
I have to say that Disney did an amazing job dubbing the Hiyao Miyazaki films in english but that is a rare exception.

they don't want to READ anything. books, magazines, comics: most people don't read ANY of them nowadays.

Could have been one of the Steig Larsen stories that have been converted to films - great films so far. If you don't watch anything but films in English (or any native language) you miss out on so much. Too bad for them.

btw, I'm wondering if that girl in your story had a problem with Inglourious Basterds (which is heavily subtitled) or is it just stuff she considers "foreign."

Amen! not reading subtitles means you're missing out on some of the world's most amazing movies. It just insane.
