Meet Daisy the Demoted Hunting Dog.

She's been living in a barn, then living in a crate for the last number of months. She came to us on Boxing Day. She is a good girl. Someone at some point has taught her to sit and she's eager to do it for food or affection. She doesn't crap in the house, eat our cats or bother the kids. Shes 2 years-ish.

But she is a noodle of a dog and can get food off of the far corners of the counter. Any training tips for counter surfers?

How about other "how to let your dog know you're the boss" tips?
As well as food aggression tips (Puppers, who is 4lbs and free feeds tries to get in her bowl and she has drawn a little blood).

Any budding dog whisperers out there care to give me some advice?

dogs don't tend to like getting sprayed with water in the face, so to trin my dogs from not getting things odd the counters, we had a squirty bottle full of water and sprayed her every time she stole things, needless to say, we've had her for 3 years now and she doesn't steal any titbits!

i agree with the water spraying thing. use it on the stream setting and a little bit by their noses scares them enough after awhile. other than that, we have used firm no's and time outs. my dog lady, who is a rescue, knows when she's done something bad now, and has a guilty look on her face and runs for her bed and puts herself in time out now. another thing that has kept the "sacred" areas of the house sacred (the living room especially) is if there is no doorway, to use a babygate. we got a great one from ikea that is a locking swinging barred "door" that is hip height, so we can so back and forth without climbing over, yet the dogs can't jump over the gate or nose it open. in the beginning, we used it to keep them out of the living room and in the kitchen unless we were home, and letting them see that being in other area of the house was a privilege, not a right. now we only lock the gate at night (they sleep in the kitchen) or if we are vacuuming. but they know if they have done something wrong, it's timeout time and the gate is locked.

also, if you keep your garbage behind a door (especially with a larger dog like daisy), if you don't already have one for your kids, get a door latch for the garbage. lady enjoys thoroughly having a midnight snack, as we soon learned as we got her. and we want to keep the other one from having that habit, so we prevented it by having that safety latch.

lord that was long winded. good luck!

aw! i just love her.

as far as food aggression goes, lilly was free fed for a long, long time. when we moved to portland, my housemate's dog would get into her food and the little scraps would ensue. i had to move lilly to a feeding schedule of breakfast and dinner. then when sugar came into the picture, we fed the girls their meals in two separate rooms w/doors closed.

is there any way you could put pupper's food in a utility room or something and use a child gate to block daisy's access and make a gap under the gate big enough for puppers to get under to get to food?

whatever happens, i know you will figure it out. i always thought you were the secret dog whisperer!! rigel has talked about a book before in the dogs group when on particular village idiot got a dog.

try leaving something on the counter edge that well not be so appetizing to her taste buds...something extra extra spicy.....I had to do that once to my doggy king..I miss him so...but it worked like a charm on him...he never did it again....
but doggies are like kids...every one is different tongue wink

Demoted hunting dog?
Counter surfer? Now that's a term I haven'y heard before! biggrin
Wish I knew more about dogs. I prefer cats, even though I've always had a dog around.
Good luck with the training.
Looks like a sweet dog.

Dogs are pack animals, so you have to show them you are the alpha dog. Use a firm voice and look them in the eye. Doing those two things have served me well in training all the dogs I've had in my life.
