Happy shark week!

What's your favorite shark?
Mine? The Thresher shark.

Here's some shark facts for you.

EL SUICIDO LOCO Sometimes when fishermen catch a shark, they will cut off its fins for soup and throw the shark back into the sea—still alive. The mutilated shark is unable to swim or breathe and eventually dies. This also happens mainly in Japan.

EL SUICIDO LOCO The movie Jaws fueled widespread fear and hatred of sharks, and the shark has been intensely hunted since. It is so endangered that many countries have taken steps to protect it. Ironically, the late Peter Benchley, the author of the book, supported shark conservation.

EL SUICIDO LOCO Approximately 100 million sharks are killed every year. Shark teeth are used to make necklaces; cartilage is used to make fertilizers; skin is used to make leather; liver is used to make face cream, sap, and fuel. The mass killing of sharks creates a negative, cascading effect in the global environment.

EL SUICIDO LOCO For every human killed by a shark, humans kill two million sharks.

EL SUICIDO LOCO More people are killed by bee stings and lightning than by shark attacks. Worldwide about 30 people die each year from shark attacks, which means a person has a one in 300 million chance of being killed by a shark. A shark attack most often occurs when a shark mistakes a person for a seal or other animal.

Just some food for thought.
You should watch this video and this one as well while you're at it.
I'm warning you now, it's not for someone with a weak stomach.

Sorry for the babble, it just so happens my favorite animal has a whole week dedicated to them. Spread the shark love!

Loved the set.
I knew that the hysteria and fear over shark attacks was exaggerated, but I had no idea they were hunted to such extremes. And throwing a live de-finned shark back in the water is both cruel (for obvious reasons) and wasteful (since some people do eat shark steaks and shark fillets). The cartilage is also used to make homeopathic remedies, most recently on the grounds that sharks don't get cancer. I'm not sure if they get cancer or not, but if they do, I doubt taking an extract of their cartilage will cure or prevent it in humans.

I was watching some show on National Geographic Channel with Chef Ramsay going around China investigating the shark fin market. It made me sick to my stomach when he got onto a roof that was drying thousands of shark fins in the sun. Then they showed the buildings next to that building and they all were drying more shark fins... Sad and infuriating at the same time...

I love the Tiger shark, it's such a well evolved predator, Great White is pretty cool as well for its raw power and the Whale shark for just being the biggest damn fish in the ocean.
