Social networks. I spend way too much time on them, or maybe not enough time. Do I have a personal brand? What should I share with which network?

Here's all the social sites I'm on:
Facebook
Twitter
Tumblr
Pinterest
Google Reader (no longer a social site sadly)
Google+
Instagram
Pastmapper
Foursquare
Goodreads
Suicidegirls (no duh)
Etsy (kind of social)
Path (actually I deleted my account because it was a ghost town, but essentially I will try any new social app. Can't wait for Pheed to start accepting new users again!)

EDIT: I forgot about Reddit! I've had two accounts on Reddit in the past and I deleted both of them because it was making me miserable. I try not to go there at all anymore unless someone links me to something specific.

I'm also on a message board, which is what we used for virtual socializing before the concept of "social" happened. I had a Myspace page and a Friendster page. I used to use chatrooms, both on AOL and on a client that was local to my hometown. I remember going to a meetup for that chat client at the Straw Hat Pizza near my house when I was thirteen or fourteen. People were being introduced with their handles, and some of them we kept calling by their handle for years, long after the chat client went defunct.

Virtual socializing has been a huge part of my life for a long, long time. At this point online and real life are the same thing.

What social networks do you use? Do you like it? How do you use your social accounts?

Trans people and their struggle occupies a big place in my thought space. Moreso now than usual, because one of the people closest to me is beginning to move towards transitioning. The concept of questioning is central to my life and transgender people are forced to question something others are able to take for granted. What does it mean, exactly, to be "male" or "female"?

I am cisgendered; that means I was born with an external appearance and physiognomy that matches my internal experience of gender. I have a great deal of privilege as a result. Gender is one of the most basic ways in which we identify, more seemingly essential than race or culture or age or attractiveness or wealth. Having a body that anyone could look at and treat as the gender I identify with paves over an enormous number of issues that trans people must encounter every day. Like than many other groups, trans people are "other," they are a minority.

Many people are upset by the idea of not-immediately-obvious-gender to the point of rage and violence. There is a terror at the concept that gender is not as solid a foundation as one might believe. Of course if one has studied feminism one knows that gender expectations are cruel and wrong, but there is still a big cognitive leap between "boys should get their own easy bake ovens" and "being a boy doesn't necessarily mean having a penis." A person whose appearance is between or not instantly gender obvious is whispered about and pointed at, and sometimes much worse.

I just read this excellent and very accessible explanation of the definitions of cis and trans. It really puts into perspective what cis privilege is, while still being compassionate towards cis people who may not be ready to identify as such. Each of us, actually, gets to decide how we identify. Even if you have lived all your life without questioning the gender you were assigned, you get to question it now if you want, and then decide that actually you are comfy with it, or not. You get to pick which parts of your gender, and its roles and forms, you want to partake in.

I think trans acceptance will be revolutionary for trans people themselves and for cis people. Cis people will get to break free of the policing and enforcement of gender which can be so damaging. And trans people will get to not be murdered anymore for who they are but instead loved and celebrated. As someone who is cis and who loves a trans person very much, that day cannot come soon enough.

Been feeling pretty great the last few days. How was your New Year's Eve?

Hey pornofriends. Does anyone here have Pheed channel? Once the site is allowing new members again I am thinking about creating a channel.

Experiences? Pros and cons?

Happy almost new year!

Do you feel empty inside?

Do you fill the emptiness with relationships, drugs, food, shopping, tv, arguing with people on the internet, being successful?

Do you need to numb the ache of that empty hole somehow?

Where does that emptiness come from, why does it exist? Why is just being never enough?

Do you drink yourself to sleep?

Are you constantly sarcastic?

Do you have to be in a relationship, all the time, no matter how unhappy the relationship makes you?

Do you just buy things and put them somewhere in your house, as though the house were the empty place inside you, and if only you bought enough things it would finally fill?

Did you have a kid to fill the abyss? Did it work?

it makes me really sad, angry, and tired that in america everything is a political issue. whether to give people health care. whether to teach children science. how to greet people in the winter. everything is a big debate that has two extremely opposed sides that can't see any common ground.

this includes, sadly, responses to tragedies like the school shooting today. i do think it's important to harness the rage and bafflement we all feel around this tragedy to talk about our gun culture, our culture of violence, and our culture of mental health. i don't like that instead it's used as an occasion to blame the other side, to demonize, and to push agendas.

it's just so tiring and so sad. and i wish there were some way it could stop but i just don't see what anyone can do anymore. too many people in power benefit too much from us all hating each other and arguing constantly.

i hope this doesn't come across as preachy. i am really sad and tired right now, and have been thinking about this lately. the sandy hook shooting "debate" is just another example. i also, it goes without saying, feel horrible for the victims and their families and everyone involved.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! My birthday was very good indeed. Mr_Reliable bought me a midcentury dresser that is gigantic and will hold more clothes than I could ever actually buy. Then he took me to dinner at Michael Mina, which was truly the best dinner I have ever had. Then we had drinks at Tosca, a time capsule of a bar that has not changed anything since 1960. Tons of friends came and it was super fun and at one point I had 4 drinks in front of me. Today I feel wonderful as you can imagine.

Also, Coco did my hair! I love it. It was blue-black with some homemade red chunks before, and now it is pretty reddish brown with cherry chunks and I just love it. If you need a new hair color and you're in the Bay Area I cannot recommend her enough.

Here is an iphone video of me shooting Mr_Reliable's Kimber 1911. The sound is terrible because guns are too loud for the little microphone.

Get Flash player

Shooting is fun! I can't wait to go again.
